GHOTKI (Dunya News) - According to a statement issued by Mari Petroleum Company, the company has discovered new gas reserves at Ghotki district, Dunya News reported on Friday.

This is the sixth consecutive gas discovery by Mari Petroleum Company in the area. According to preliminary results, the well produces 3.1 million standard cubic feet gas per day.

Mari Petroleum Company statement added the well was drilled down to a depth of 1,250 metres. According to experts, the discovery of this new gas reserve will help meet the gas demand in the country.

It will be nice of they disclose estimate size of reserves i rarely see that in news

.
Anyway despite several small discoveries we are running out of gas quickly

.
Not bad, but its 1% of Pak production. Will need 100 such discoveries in a year to have any impact.

These discoveries will barely slow the rapid rate of depletion we are facing

Something big of 10+tcf discovery needed like that of sui otherwise in 10-15 years there will be no gas

Also we need to use gas carefully..focus power gen to renewable solar-hydro combo, nuclear and thar coal

.
These discoveries should not even be making the news. How about exploring for oil, Gas in Balochistan or Sindh deserts. Around a decade ago their were plenty of news of Balochistan being a nest for Gas but no more information is available.

Just Across The Border In Raajsthan India Has Found 7 Billion Barrels Oil and 9 tcf Natural Gas Not Far From Tharparkar and Rahimyar Khan

Alhamdulillah .

Long term we need to look to tech. Electric ovens and hobs, bio-gas, ground source heat pumps to warm our homes.

The tech is in the market - we need to manufacture it in our own country and legislate for it to be the new normal.

We need to invest in electricity CHEAP electricity
Thats the future ..cars heating cooking etc can be done via that.
Electricity can be made cheap via huge solar and hydro capacity ..use solar during day and hydro at night /peak times

Estimated potential of hydro is >100,000 mw

The investment will be high but energy security is important

With solar plumting down govt can do open bidding for solar and own investment in hydro

The number of people thinking solar energy is cheap is just too high lolz. Infact solar is very expensive, the cheapest option is hydel energy and wind energy. Pakistan has a huge hydel potential, we should accelerate small dams and run of the river projects.

It's actually coming down and if we were involved in the manufacture of equipment it'd be even lower.

These are the costs in North America.

Those costs are going to be different here but the general trend is the same.

This article is also quite interesting. Compare the experience of Pakistan and India with solar.

This is not to say I'm anti hydro or wind, not at all.

Yes but we are not an industrial country and would only import it, making it expensive for us, it will become cheaper but we would still import it, unless local production and manufacturing kocks in. Also not to forget the environmental impact of manufacturing solar panels and other equipment. My point was that our hydel potential is very high and its the cheapest and cleanest and have other advantages as well, so our main focus should be hydel.

@niaz sir any input on this?

Gas was discovered at Dharki District Ghotri back by Pak Satnvac Project (Esso ) in 1957, at that time at 4.2-TCF, it was then the 2nd largest discovery ( after Sui) in Pakistan. Esso's Share ( 51%) was acquired by Fauji Foundation In 1983. Esso Fertilizer company ( now Engro) was set to use gas from this field in the early '70s. The field been producing gas for more than 50 years and according to the last data I have, it was producing about 420-mm cft of gas per day. But after 50 years the field is near end of its life and likely to be exhausted in the next 10 years.

The area, therefore, has gas containing rock formations. Mari gas company had been drilling exploratory wells and discovered new deposits at Tipu-1 well near Ghotki totaling about 35 mm cft/day from two pay zones.

The discovery of only 3.1-mm cft/day IMO is too small to deserve a new thread.
