NEW DELHI - India's capital city is home to the dirtiest air in the world.

A 2014 study by the World Health Organization found that New Delhi had the most toxic air out of 1,600 other cities in the world. The problem is largely caused by a growing number of vehicles in the city, which use low-grade fuels.

American scientist Joshua Apte has been monitoring New Delhi's pollution since 2007.

"We are looking at levels of PM 2.5 right now that are around 250 to 300 micrograms per cubic meter, so 25 to 30 times higher than the long term standard that we might here about," he said.

In layman's terms, high concentrations of microscopic particles are a part of the city's air. The particles are practically invisible, but they are incredibly damaging to human lungs.

Because the particles cannot be detected by the human eye, the common perception is that cities like Beijing are more polluted.

"I think that's the function of awareness," Apte said. "Levels in Delhi are 45 or 50 percent higher than that of Bejing. The standard for the World Health Organization is 10. Typical levels in Beijing are about 100 precisely. In Delhi over the past few years, the average has been more like 150."

In an effort to help residents cope with the poor air conditions, entrepreneur Barun Aggarwal developed an air purification technique combining filters and plants.

"Every year the problem is only getting worse," he said. "It's not getting better because we're adding 1,400 new cars a day every day in Delhi. The quality of fuel is very poor."

As India makes economic development a priority, pollution levels are only set to increase. Studies show some 660 million Indians lose about three years of their lives because of the air they breathe.

Some delusion still want to insist Beijing is the worst.

They are so sad to accept reality. So much of Indian. This data is by reputable WHO. World recognised organization in health and environmental issue.
