Nepal to sign pact with China on One Belt, One Road initiative

Good big nail on Indian dominance over Nepal govt been put
We are still doing trade without OBOR. :pop:We are just enjoying the show. China has a production overcapacity and the free trades that comes with OBOR makes the show interesting.

Not to mention the circular debt trap. Just like Kyrgistan who owes 1/3 of it's debt to Exim bank of China:-).
While enjoying the show dont forget that India losing influence in the region very fast.

all the best to Nepal and China
Yes and a good bye to Indian regional designs.

Yes and a good bye to Indian regional designs.
As long as we have investment in our neighboring countries and have open borders with Nepal, Bhutan etc... We still hold more influence. Don't expect any country to become lapdog of China. For those countries it's chance of development they have both India and China. Two large economies. They will have a better development than the one's with hostile relation with India;)

You must understand China unlike any country in the region is an export driven economy. Despite all the promises the ultimate aim for China is export and keep up the growth. And that's exactly what China is doing. Ironically every country in the region wants to export.

Nepal to sign pact with China on One Belt, One Road initiative
Nepal has decided to become part of China’s ambitious Belt and Road Initiative and will sign a framework agreement on the One Belt, One Road (OBOR) programme this week, reflecting Beijing’s increasing clout in Kathmandu.

A cabinet meeting on Monday decided to sign the framework agreement on OBOR ahead of the Belt and Road Forum to be held in Beijing during May 14-15.

“Nepal has decided to sign an agreement on OBOR that will link Nepal to India and Europe,” information and communication minister Surendra Karki said after the meeting of the cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda”.

So China is planning to link Nepal to India and Europe without India joining OBOR- But India is already linked to Nepal by rail and road- :o::o::o:

As we speak Indian broad gauge Line is being expanded to Nepal-:D

One route from Jainagar in Bihar seems to be already running-:enjoy:

I would ignore the legendary Chinese intellect on this forum- :sarcastic: What is even more amusing are the cheerleaders who dance to this legendary intellect- :omghaha:

 As if Indian economy is dependent on Bhutan, Nepal, Burm, Bangladesh. We import from all these countries. Our main export markets are in west.
Instead of worrying about Indian economy you think about your own low end economy.

Countries around the region are working toward integration and more trade. India shouldn't isolate itself. Isolationism doesn't work.

There is already trade going on between these countries. What's the point of India attending the summit? And we have reservations about the project as it pass through disputed territories.

Nepal and China on Friday signed a framework agreement on China’s One Belt One Road (OBOR) initiative, days ahead of a summit in Beijing where an ambitious plan to build a modern-day Silk Road trade routes and lead a new era of globalisation would be unveiled.

Foreign Secretary Shankar Das Bairagi and Chinese Ambassador Yu Hong signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on behalf of their respective governments at a function organised at Foreign Ministry in Kathmandu.

The signing ceremony was jointly witnessed by Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister for Finance Krishna Bahadur Mahara and Minister for Foreign Affairs Prakash Sharan Mahat.

Addressing the function, Foreign Minister Mahat hailed the agreement as a major step in Nepal-China relations. “Road and railway connectivity is very important for us and we want investment in the same,” said Minister Mahat.

Saying that Nepal needs huge foreign investment, he hoped that Nepal will benefit from the agreement.

A press statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) stated that the major thrust of the MoU is to promote mutually beneficial cooperation between Nepal and China in various fields such as economy, environment, technology and culture adding that the agreement aims to promote people-to-people exchanges of different levels between the two countries..

“The MoU aims at promoting cooperation on promoting connectivity of facilities, trade connectivity, financial integration and connectivity of people,” read the statement, “The MoU seeks to strengthen cooperation in connectivity sectors including transit transport, logistic systems, transport network and related infrastructures development such as railway, road, civil aviation, power grid, information and communication.”

According to the MoFA statement, the OBOR framework agreement contains detailed framework for mutual cooperation in line with the MoU signed between the Governments of Nepal and China in December 2014.

A decision to sign the framework agreement on Chinese President Xi Jinping’s flagship initiative investing billions of dollars in infrastructure projects including railways, ports and power grids across Asia, Africa and Europe was taken by a Cabinet meeting on Monday after months of confusion and extended negotiations.

There's been trade going on among these parts of the world for thousands of years. So what's the point of joining any trade deal, right? OBOR is about further integration. It brings more opportunities. It gives a huge boost to infrastructure. Everyone can agree that India needs infrastructure, right?

My question was what is the point of having India. You didn't answer that. Yes there was trade before and now.
About infrastructure you mean loans. We have enough experience taking loans and increasing our external debt. So, no thanks.
Now, can you please elaborate on the losses we will endure if we don't take part in the initiative?
Another thing is, most of our foreign trades are with the west. But majority of the EU members are not attending the summit.
Secondly we already have a north South Transport corridor which is in the terminal phase. While OBOR is in planning phase. Let it complete and we see how it develops, then we will join. Now, we need to take caution. As we are not in a state to start taking loans. If you are investing in India, there is already a process by which you can directly invest in industries in India. Which China is already doing.

Although Nepal had made verbal commitments in the past to support China’s Silk Road initiative, Friday’s signing officially translates that commitment to a binding agreement :yahoo::woot::welcome::smitten::china::pakistan::cheers: :nana::yay:

Nepal on Friday signed an agreement to be part of President Xi Jinping’s ambitious plan to build a new Silk Road linking Asia, Africa and Europe, a move that could alarm India, which jostles with China for influence in Kathmandu.

At a special function held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kathmandu, Foreign Secretary Shanker Das Bairagi, the ministry’s top bureaucrat, and Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Yu Hong inked the deal, the ministry said.

“This is Nepal joins China's ‘One Belt, One Road’ initiative, possibly alarming India,” said Foreign Minister Prakash Sharan Mahat, who witnessed the signing to bring the Himalayan nation into Beijing’s initiative to expand its economic and geopolitical heft across several continents.

The massive infrastructure project is commonly referred to as “One Belt, One Road”, short for Silk Road Economic Belt and 21st Century Maritime Silk Road.

Ministry spokesman Bharat Raj Paudyal said the main objective of the agreement is “to promote mutually beneficial cooperation between Nepal and China in various fields such as the economy, environment, technology and culture.”

The agreement targets boosting connectivity in areas such as transit, roads, railways, trade, aviation and power. Specific agreements on these areas are to be worked out later.

Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Krishna Bahadur Mahara, who also witnessed the signing, is leaving for Beijing later Friday to participate in the two-day OBOR Conference there starting Sunday.

Although Nepal had made verbal commitments in the past to support OBOR, Friday’s signing officially translates that commitment to a binding agreement. Nepal’s Cabinet made a de:nana:cision earlier this week to officially join the initiative.

Sandwiched between economic, military and geographic giants India and China, tiny Nepal relies heavily on imports from India and completely on Indian ports for sea access. Analysts in Nepal say the landlocked nation was under pressure from New Delhi to stay away from joining the initiative.

Nepal’s engagement with China at the people-to-people level as well as in trade and commerce is constrained by the impenetrable Himalayas.

However, Nepal and India share an open border that nationals of the two countries can cross without a visa. Nepal is culturally close to India and cross-border marriages are common.

India, which has traditionally enjoyed greater economic and political clout in Nepal, has faced increasing competition from China in recent years.

In September 2015, after Nepal adopted a constitution that was received frostily by New Delhi, India imposed a five-month-long trade blockade on Nepal ostensibly in support of agitation by Indian-origin Madhesi protesters in the country’s south.

The blockade proved to be a blessing for China as it pushed Nepal closer to its northern neighbour.

Faced with crippling shortages of fuel, cooking gas, and even medicine, the then coalition government led by nationalist communist leader Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli signed agreements with Beijing to secure sea access via Chinese ports and to import petroleum products from China, breaking India’s monopoly over Nepal’s fuel supplies and access to seaports.

Pakistan hear it loud and clear Hindustan will never be at peace with Pakistan's development and prosperity. They have injected their proxies far and wide across Pakistan. Indians have the utmost hatred for every Pakistani and want to destroy the country. Do not blindly follow Nawaz Shareefs policy of peaceful coexistence this is flawed each time the peace initiative is committed from Pakistan yet the Indians return the favour with death and destruction. Are you people so gullible to think they are sincere? Indian media feeds from deep rooted hatred and exaggerated claims agaisnt Pakistan. It is our sad reality that Pakistan keeps falling for the same constant lies by India. The day is not far when Hindustan with the support from Afghanistan will launch a full scale war agaisnt Pakistan.

Nepal in talks with China to build $8 billion cross-border rail link: finance ministry official

Nepal is in talks with China to build a cross-border rail link that may cost up to $8 billion, and funding could be expected after Nepal formally signed up to Beijing's Belt and Road initiative, a Nepali finance ministry official said on Sunday.

Yug Raj Pandey, an under secretary at Nepal's Ministry of Finance, told Reuters the proposed 550 kilometer-long railway would connect China's western Tibet region to Nepal's capital of Kathmandu and will carry goods and passengers.

The Himalayan nation officially signed an agreement two days ago to be part of President Xi Jinping's ambitious plan to build a new Silk Road, he said on the sidelines of the Belt and Road Forum in Beijing.

"Now we are a member of (the initiative) we can get some specific project assistance from China's government. We expect it for the railway," he said. "Once we connect by railway then we can increase our trade and invite more tourists to Nepal."

Pandey said the two countries had been in discussions for the past five months about the project, which could cost $7-8 billion and take up to eight years to complete.

He said Nepal planned to start preparing a detailed project report for the railway, and that they had yet to decide how much funding they will seek from China.

The railway will travel over 400 kilometers in China to the Nepal border, and then about another 150 kilometers from the Nepali border to Kathmandu, he said.

"Our first priority is railway, and second will be hydropower projects and cross-border transmission lines between Nepal and China," he said.

China last year agreed to consider building a railway into Nepal and to start a feasibility study for a free trade agreement with impoverished, landlocked Nepal, which has been trying to lessen its dependence on its other big neighbor India.

Pandey declined to comment about India's opposition to parts of the Belt and Road initiative, in particular an economic corridor China is building in Pakistan.

China has touted what it formally calls the Belt and Road initiative as a new way to boost global development since Xi unveiled the plan in 2013, aiming to expand links between Asia, Africa, Europe and beyond underpinned by billions of dollars in infrastructure investment.
