Nepal Planning to Airlift Fuel Following India's Unofficial Blockage

There were some previous threads about it I think.

Basically, India is unhappy with the new Nepalese constitution, which they see as being unfair to Indian-origin Mahdesis in southern Nepal.

The Nepalese government had accused India of unofficially blockading Nepal, and have said they will go to China instead.

The Indian government claims they are not blockading Nepal, and that the supply trucks will not pass due to fear of Mahdesi protestors.

Regardless of claims by both sides, the fact is that thousands of trucks are piled up at the border and Nepal is running out of supplies.
How can big event can be without some noise. Suppose a country changed the from the monarchy to democracy, or the communist to democatic, or democracy to communist there will be some noise, because there not all people could be satisfied and not all peoples choise could be fulfilled. Here the constitution is accepted by majority not by uninamously, how can it be without any problem.

Any way there is no blockade officially, but due to some unrest people in the border areas the transporters don't want risk their life and trucks. Rest assure everything will be normal again soon.

It's good to know but no offence! I remember only one Indian poster that claims to be native from NE.

You're referring to the ST one, if I'm correct.

I'll say only this. There is a saying in my native Bengali:: "Oti Bhokti Chore'r lokkhon".

Means "Too much devotion is the sign of a thief".

If S Nepal and adjoining parts of India have similarities then Nepal should claim these. Then it is possible BD and Nepal will have a common boundary which will save it from this perennial Indian mischief.

.

actually, thats what UML and Maoists are claiming.

there are several aspects...

1.Indian Trucks couldn't enter into Nepal as Madhesis, who lives next to border crossing has called a Strike which is now running over 2 months and killed over 40.India doesn't want to risk their people's lives and property as in the past, these Nepalis burnt nearly 70 Indian trucks.

2.India is the main driving force for Nepal's constitution. It is India which diplomatically forced Maoists,UML,Nepali Congress and other parties to create a Constitution(Civil War winner Maoists previously demanded to create a Authoritarian State like China where a Communist committee will control everything and demanded to integrate their force to integrate into Nepal's Army.UML somewhat supported this line.Nepali Congress rather wanted a democracy). But after creation they somewhat ignored their "Madhesi Population",which consists over 40% of their population. These madhesis live next to the plain of Indo-Nepal Border and are somewhat marginalized.

3.India demanded to resolve this problem with dialogue with Madhesi parties before finalizing the draft of Constitution. But till now,Nepal's larger parties are ignoring this.

4.It is speculated that Nepal assured India that dialogue will take place but never happened, thats why India created an unofficial blockade.

5.Now the most important aspect, only Maoist and UML,which is somewhat closer to China and their student wings are issuing all these remarks, against which India already said that this might deteriorate the relation further.

6.Neither Nepal Government or other political parties blamed India.

read this...

The Nepal Sadbhavana Party (NSP) on Tuesday criticised the local media reports and other people who blamed the Indian counterpart for its involvement in the blockade of several freight trucks on the border.
"The Blockade has been done by Madhesi people. The people of Madhesh have sat on the border. This is being done to malign India by anti-India people in Nepal and it won't affect our relationship with India, there is nothing to worry about," President NPS, Rajendra Mahto told ANI.

Mahato also said there was a wrong propaganda being spread against India in Nepal and that Nepal media was projecting wrong news deliberately, adding that India had nothing to do with the blockade.

"This has been done earlier also that a section of people in Nepal have accused India of its involvement in the internal issues," he added.

When asked whether India was helping Madhesi's in their protest on border, Mahato said "India is only providing security to their freight carriers as there is no security from the Nepal side but there was no help by the other side in the blockade."

However, Nepal's Finance Minister Ram Sharan Mahant refuted the reports that Nepal was to redirect trade with China after undeclared blockade by India, saying "We can't fully redirect our trade with India to China due to geographical difficulties."

"It is not possible to redirect trade to China immediately," Mahat told to the local media.

Several freight trucks, including some fuel tankers, which were stranded on the Indian side for over 11 days, entered the Nepali side through different border check-points on October 4.

India Not To Blame For Border Blockade, Says Nepal Sadbhavana Party

It is reported that in Indian side, thousands of trucks are waiting to enter, which is already stretched over 10 km.some trucks are entering into Nepal gradually.

then Nepal should claim these. Then it is possible BD and Nepal will have a common boundary which will save it from this perennial Indian mischief.
I remember there was a guy named masud in WAB in its early days, circa 2004 perhaps. He too talked about various military 'options' against India but got promptly shot down. You don't happen to be him do you?

Nepal Planning to Airlift Fuel Following India's Unofficial Blockage

File photo: People in Nepal crowded public transportation due to recent fuel crisis.

Nepal is planning to airlift fuel from other countries following a halt in supply of petroleum products by southern neighbor India some two weeks ago.

The state-owned Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) is doing necessary work to ensure smooth fuel supply through airlifting after the Nepal government directed the firm to seek alternatives.

Nepal has been hit hard by the shortage of petroleum products and essential goods after India halted all the supplies through the unofficial blockade a fortnight ago. However, India has been denying such blockade.

The NOC held an emergency meeting Wednesday to plan airlifting fuel from Bangladesh in the short term and from China in the long run. However, no formal decision has been made yet.

The Himalayan nation relies heavily on India for its fuel.

From listening to both sides of the story, I have concluded India is interfering in Nepal's internal affair by forcing them to alter its constitution. The result are massive protest against India.
In retaliation, India refuse to send in supplies to Nepal.

China to appoint new ambassador to Nepal!
KATHMANDU, NEPAL : October 08 2015

KATHMANDU, NEPAL : Considering the changed political situation in Nepal, the northern neighbor China has also been mulling to appoint new ambassador to Nepal.

According to a source of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs ( MoFA) in Nepal, China's Foreign Ministry has been preparing to appoint new ambassador to Nepal replacing the incumbent Chinese ambassador to Nepal Wu Chuntai.

Though the China has yet to reach on the conclusion over the person, it is said that the high level diplomat will be appointed as the new Chinese ambassador to Nepal, an official of the ministry said preferring anonymity.

The China has reached on the conclusion to appoint new ambassador to Nepal in the mean time when the Nepal is mulling to sign in a long term deal with China on bilateral trade particularly to import the petroleum products.

Following the promulgation of the new constitution in Nepal, India has been imposing border blockade to Nepal particularly the petroleum products.

The lesson from border blockade
Kathmandu, Nepal October 03 2015

Though it was expected that lasting peace would be restored in the country after promulgation of the new constitution, another form of crisis has been emerged in the country, which has now badly crippling the daily life of the people now. The internal and external forces, which have been opposing the overwhelmingly promulgated Nepal constitution 2072, have been pushing the country into another form of crisis in the name of protest against the new constitution. The agitating Madhes based parties are now concentrating their protest into the highway and bordering areas with intent to disturb the smooth supply of daily commodities. The Neighboring India, which has expressed its dissatisfaction over the newly promulgated constitution, has also been imposing unofficial border blockade in the pretext of insecurity due to the protest of the agitating Madhes based parties in Nepal. It is being guessed that the agitating Madhes based parties and the neighboring India has joined their hands to impose their agendas in the new constitution through the means of pressure like border blockade. As the only source to procure the petroleum products is blockade, dearth of the petroleum products and cooking gas has seen in Kathmandu and other parts of the country.

The Nepal Oil Corporation, the sole government monopoly of petroleum products, is running out of fuel and cooking gas due to the dwindling of supply. India authorities have been denying not only to filling the tankers queuing in the border but also dillydallying to clear the customs in the pretext of insecurity of the freight companies. It is being alleged that the neighboring India has been imposing unofficial blockade not only to express its dissatisfactions over the overwhelmingly promulgated new constitution but also to assist the agitating Madhes based parties. As the interest of India and agendas of the agitating parties are similar in nature, both seem to have intended to fulfill their interest by helping each other. It is also being alleged that some leaders of the agitating Madhes based parties are tuning the line of India. The ongoing unofficial border blockade of neighboring India in the pretext of insecurity and the ongoing protest program launched in the border lines from the support of Indian nationals would not be just coincident.

India has been repeatedly claiming that it has not imposed border blockade pointing finger to the protests in Nepal for the predicament. But a question is that why the Indian officials in the border have been denying entering the petroleum products carrying tankers but not the fruit and vegetable carrying trucks? It is not only humorous but also sufficient to guess the exact intention of neighboring India. There is no alternative of resolving the recent predicament through the diplomatic channel as neither can we manage alternative solution immediately nor we can change neighbor like India which can impose even the border blockade going against the international law and bilateral agreements between the two countries. As far as the issue of border blockade is not a new one, the country should adopt alternatives to curb the dependency in fuel and other essential things India. As the country is potential in hydro-power, the government should give emphasis to establish the mega projects to give emphasis to the use of electricity. It is shameful that the only highway linking to the northern neighbor China is not reopened since five months. The bordering points to China including Rasuwagadi also need be brought into function immediately.

The more I read into the case more I am inclined to believe that all protests and anti-constitution agitations are quite justified from the Madhseshi and other organizations. Nepal's traditional supply route pass through the southern Terais which holds strategic importance in domestic politics and yet, the political elites have not been gracious enough to grant them a fair representation in the parliament despite constituting a considerable portion of the population.

India's diplomatic effort though far from being up to the mark has fought vigorously for a participative democracy in this country and last thing it wants to see is Nepal adopting a primitive totalitarian model of governance or anything of that sort. The Nepali constitution is flexible enough for further amendments and it is just a matter of time that the people from the southern tracts will find their fair representation in the parliament.

With the onset of winter linkage would be extremely hazardous. But there is always a summer coming after the winter. The Chinese have experience of building the Silk Road in Pakistan. Also it has built roads and railway on top of the world - thought impossible. From now on we will witness China literally breaking into Nepal to rescue it from India's strangulation.

Speak for yourself, not the Chinese. Or have you been nominated as the Chinese spokesman on Nepalese affairs?
