ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Friday wrote a letter to President Mamnoon Hussain, urging him to reject the mercy petitions of five condemned prisoners who were convicted for their involvement in terrorism cases.

The convicts include:

  • Muhammad Ikramul Haq alias Lahori alias Farooq Haider (son of Bashir Ahmed)

  • Ahmed Ali alias Asif alias Shish Naag (son of Ghulam Abbas)

  • Mohammad Tayyab alias Sajjad (son of Nabi Ahmed)

  • Ghulam Shabbir alias Doctor alias Nasir alias Zeeshan alias Sohail (son of Bashir Ahmed)

  • Zulfiqar Ali (son of Abdul Hameed)
The five prisoners hailing from Karachi and convicted for target killings had been arrested in different instances.

On Dec 17, Nawaz had approved the removal of moratorium on the death penalty after the attack on Peshawar's Army Public School which killed 148 people — including more than 132 schoolchildren.

Take a look: Nawaz removes moratorium on death penalty

In the wake of the removal of the moratorium on the death penalty, seven executions have been carried out.

Examine: Another convict in Musharraf attack case executed

The moratorium on the death penalty was imposed by former president Asif Ali Zardari during the tenure of the Pakistan Peoples Party government in 2008.

Hmm.... President needs to be told everything. There is no constitutional requirement of PM advice on this matter.

it's for publicity.

The president will do as Nawaz pleases. After all, he's PML-N's president.

He is following the process......when a "system" works well, everyone knows their place, level and how to deal with others by following a courteous, respectful PROCESS. So you are setting an example for others to follow.

I assume in your books, he should've just attacked the President House instead of writing a letter or attacked the Parliament all together or issued threats to the President of Pakistan that if you forgive them, I'll drag you out by your hair and will beat you up on the street :hitwall:

I hope you realize that the days of violence, whether it be for political reasons or others, are gone from Pakistan. I think everyone's woken up to the fact that if you preach violence even at a political level, you produce another generation of intolerant, extremists, who don't know how to talk, all they know is, "they are right" and hell with the entire nation.

45 President's power to grant pardon, etc.
The President shall have power to grant pardon, reprieve and respite, and to remit, suspend or commute any sentence passed by any court, tribunal or other authority.

Indeed there is no constitutional requirement.

That was not the intention. Due legal process must take place; that's what separates us from them. But President should know his job and his status. When mercy petition reaches him, he accepts or rejects it as per law. But in this case:

1. He does not walk a step without asking NS "sir, what do I say now"

2. He does not know what President of Pakistan really means and what powers and duties he has in this testing time.

3. NS saw an opportunity to gain some political mileage by announcing this letter (he could have just verbally told him) which at first place had no need to be written.

I hope you understand. People who are custodian of powers and law should just apply it. What's with cheap publicity? Just do it, already!

1) Well, NS is the premier, so he really gets to run the country. Its the same elsewhere including India. The PM is the most authoritative figure. He or his party appoints the President actually

2) Well,he obviously know some Presidential powers, therefore writing a request letter to him.

3) Cheap publicity by writing a letter? You have people attacking the PARLIAMENT and the National TV.....that is the MOTHER of all stupid cheap publicity. You are turning your youth into extremists by using violence and street force, so you can be a PM. You sure you understand what "cheap publicity" actually means?

Agree with you on Parliment attack, dharnas etc are cheap publicity. But point was President's role especially in circumstances like this? You can decide for yourself.

President is not appointed by Pm but by Parliament.

President stays within his constitutional powers and Pm dictating him is a bad idea, it really is.

For case under discussion, PM had no business in writing an advisory letter (and make it public) to the President on a matter where constitution gives freedom to the President to decide and act.

Institutions work best when too much power is not concentrated in one post and when they don't poke in other's business. If you still feel it was right thing for him to do and current president of Pakistan is doing an excellent job in these testing times, lets agree to disagree, shall we?
