“This is no ordinary train,” said Union Minister of State for Environment Prakash Javadekar on Monday as he flagged off the third phase of the Science Express Biodiversity Special (SEBS) at the Safdarjung railway station here.

A flagship venture of the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Railways, the exhibition on wheels has been playing a role in creating awareness about India’s biodiversity, an official statement said.

Mr. Javadekar underscored the need to sustain India’s biodiversity in the present times and about 30 lakh students are expected to view it in 20 States. It will travel for 194 days and stop at 57 places before ending its journey on February 4 in Gandhinagar. The statement said the train was the brand ambassador of the Conference of Parties to the Convention on Biodiversity in Hyderabad in 2012 and it was stationed there to showcase India’s natural riches.

The train has set quite a few records and milestones and it is perhaps the world’s most visited train exhibition. Within India, it has gone to the highest rail track possible for broad gauge.

Of the 16 coaches, eight are dedicated to showcasing bio-geographical zones of India through a variety of interactive exhibits, short films and videos.

The remaining coaches have exhibits on climate change, energy and water conservation and other issues.

Mr. Javadekar said an advertising campaign would be initiated to sensitise and educate people on the nuances of the rich biodiversity of the country. India with 2.5 per cent of the earth’s land mass and 17 per cent of the world’s population, had eight per cent of the world’s biodiversity.

Its a dumb move. In a nation where public transport does not meet demand, why waste a good train and engine on a road show ?

It would be cheaper and more effective and efficient to provide each school with a laptop, a Projector and an Encyclopaedia CD. Trust the Indian Railways to make such wasteful expenditure.

That stupid train would easily cost 400 cores with an operating cost of at least 100 cores a year.

With a budget of 500 crores we can easily distribute 2000 laptops with projector and CD.

A school with a internet connection is still better. Biodiversity my @ss. Total BS.

Yes, 2000 laptops to 2000 students, most of whom will just use it to play games and watch movies, or worst increase the membership of PDF, instead of teaching 30 lakh students about Indian biodiversity. Well said sir. :blah:

2000 latop was good move but
when there is no electricity....
no good university.. seems it wrong priority..
end pople wil wath movie and game if battery chagre..
after one yr no use

Source please.

It is an intelligent educated guesstimate. Unless you think a Railway engine and 12 compartments are cheap. Note to mention the cost of 'doing them up'. Fuel price, Maintenance cost, staff salary and overhead costs. If anything I was extremely conservative.

The idea was to provide these educational tools to the teachers, not to the students genius. :coffee:

Your 'intelligent educated guesstimate' is wrong. And even if it costs that much, i will say it's money well spent.
FYI, this money does not come from GOI but through private sponsors and is co-ordinated by Indian Railways.

You are comparing apples with oranges, laptops does not come under mass education and practical exposure. This is what Dilip Surkar, executive director of VASCSC had to say, "We believe this is a great concept in educating masses on various issues related to biodiversity and environment and bridge the gap between classroom and practical exposure. ".
This train so far has received more than 1.09 crore visitors, and is estimated that 30 lakh students will visit it during this tour. Nothing can match these numbers. And you cant go on building this kind of infrastructure in each city, that will be far too expensive compared to this train.
