Narenda Modi at centre of storm over university project

Nobel prize ,barring those of pure science, are never given for accomplishments alone.

Amratya Sen is a left of left economist. His award was due to 1998 being turn of leftist block for a Nobel prize.

He has very shitty pertception on how economy works. His prescription for improving Indian economy was for India to follow example of Kerala. This is prepostrously stupid. Kerala has built it's economy on supplying salve labour to middle east. Such a model require existence of a very very large lazy population with money to emplot all those labourers, and though it work for a small state like Kerala; for it to work for India, India would require 20-30 middleeast to be able to get enough menial job for it's 1.3 billion population. Probably after humans colonalize Mars and Venus, Sen model would be possible.

This is the reason that Amratya sen is disliked not only by BJP+RSS supporters but by sane economists (including Jagdish Bhagwati) too.

Amratya Sen Nobel Prize was Purchased and paid for by his 3rd wife, Emma Georgina Rothschild :disagree:

Here is some more reality,

EconomicPolicyJournal.com: Has the Nobel Prize Become an Elitist Tool?

...The report indicates that "for the sole purpose of protecting Soros and Rothschild mining operations in West Africa, President Johnson-Sirleaf and her friend Leymah Gbowee received the 2011 Nobel Peace prize (gold medals) to help the Rothschild/Soros team control all the gold metal," adding, "A little gold for all the gold."

.
Literature and Economics is also politicized.

Even those of pure Science are not 100% objective. They ignore reserchers who actually researched under the professor who won Nobel prize and did all the work. This is the reason that even Nobel prize for pure science has a very deep bias of race and nationality.
Oh really? Please put forth the countless examples of where political agendas swayed the prize in favor of non-deserving candidates.

why does he need to say anything? especially when hot political battles were going on.

The best thing he could have said was I hope whoever becomes PM does this that etc...
Instead he tried to prove his loyalty to Manmohan Singh and made personal comments on Modi..well..there is a reason why govt employees are not supposed to campaign for the govt during the elections, though they can vote for any1..now u may argue, he is not a govt employee but the position is with support of the central govt..

P.S: I am a bengali too. Not all bengalis dislike Modi. many like me want him and my country to succeed..

Dude, It is not just a question of whether he likes or dislikes Modi.

Nalanda is in its formative stage. The foundation laid by its administrators now would determine character of this university for very long time.

Amratya sen is left of left economist. If he is allowed a tenure in Nalanda (which comes with power to hire staff), he would staff it with Left wing radicals and Nalanda will become carbon copy of JNU, Jadavpur, and Osmania university.

You could not expect BJP to allow another stronghold of it's sworn enemy , radical left to be constructed in heart of Bihar. They are shunting out Sen due to ideological, not personal reasons.

Nalanda University is ailing at childbirth | IndiaFacts

But this moment pride should be followed by caution. If the original Nalanda was famed for being a storehouse of knowledge and erudition attracting scholars throughout the globe, the revived one has been mired in controversies since day one.

The Nalanda project was conceptualized as an international university involving many countries like Japan, Australia, and Vietnam. The then UPA government financially backed a Nalanda mentor group which was set up in 2007 under the chairmanship of Nobel laureate Professor Amartya Sen. This group carried out meetings in Singapore, Tokyo, New York, Delhi and Gaya to conceptualize the establishment of the university. The Parliament enacted an Act to launch the project in 2010 which was approved by the President on 21 September and came into force on 25 November 2010.

Following its inception, this project faced controversy after controversy. Among numerous contentious incidents that marred this glorious project, the most notable ones are given below:

1. The series of controversies began with the appointment of a ‘Vice Chancellor-designate’ of the new university even before the Parliamentary Act was notified for its establishment.

2. The candidate selected for the position Gopa Sabharwal, was appointed through an order issued by a secretary in the MEA on the recommendation of the mentor group. Gopa Sabharwal was a reader in the department of sociology in the Lady Sri Ram College with limited knowledge about Nalanda. She did not meet the mandatory qualification set by the University Grants Commission (UGC) for the vice-chancellors of the central and state universities—that is, to be distinguished academicians with a minimum ten years of experience as a professor in a university system. Topping this peculiarity was Gopa Sabharwal’s monthly salary of Rs 5 lakhs which was more than double the salary of the Delhi University vice-chancellor.

3. Ignoring the government’s recruitment rules that require public notice, Dr Sabharwal picked up her friend Dr Anjana Sharma, an associate professor in Delhi University, as the Officer-on-Special Duty (OSD) on deputation with a gross monthly salary of Rs 3.30 lakhs, which is more than the salary of a Vice-Chancellor of any national university.

4. Around 2011, the Standing Committee of the Parliament under the Ministry of External Affairs, which was managing the Nalanda project stated in its report that the Nalanda project which was estimated in 2007 to cost Rs 1,005 crore “needs to be revised.”

5. In its very first meeting, the mentor group nominated Upinder Singh, daughter of the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, and her colleague Ms Nayanjot Lahiri as advisers representing India in international platforms. Both nominees are not experts on any aspect of the Nalanda tradition or history.

6. Even though on 25 August 2011, officials of the Ministry of External Affairs claimed that no vice-chancellor had been appointed to the Nalanda University, according to an RTI reply, vice chancellor Gopa Sabharwal and seven of her associates were drawing salaries since October 2010. Gopa as Vice-chancellor draws a salary of Rs 5, 06,513 per month.

7. The first two faculties that were approved to be taught were environmental studies and historical studies, to be followed by others such as information technology and international relations. This is a direct contradiction of the original vision that was outlined to launch the Nalanda—as a premier centre of learning in Buddhism. The nations which agreed to cooperate with India to revive the Nalanda did so to connect with the country’s Buddhist heritage. More importantly, the ‘School of Information Technology’ has not been passed as the part of the Act whereas Buddhist Studies have been mentioned as the first one (Vide Clause 24).

8. Since the project was approved by the Parliament, a huge part of the funding was contributed through taxing the common citizen as is the case with Central Universities. But strangely, the Planning Commission and Prime Minister’s Office decided to label Nalanda as an ‘International University’ to ward off financial regulations. However, the PMO did place the University in the ‘Central University’ domain to enable the release of funds stating: “Both capital investment and operating budget of the Nalanda University will have to come mainly from the Government of India on the pattern of Central Universities.”

9. During his tenure as the President of India, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam proposed the idea of reviving Nalanda while addressing the Joint Session of the Bihar Vidhan Mandal on 28th March, 2006. He was then offered the position of the Visitor of the University. However, in a letterdated 4 July 2011 to the then External Affairs Minister S M Krishna, Dr. Kalam wrote:

“Having involved in various academic and administrative proceedings of Nalanda University since August 2007, I believe that the candidates to be selected/appointed to the post of Chancellor and Vice Chancellor should be of extraordinary intellect with academic and management expertise. Both the Chancellor and Vice Chancellor have to personally involve themselves full-time in Bihar, so that a robust and strong international institution is built.”

This polite yet sharp letter displayed Dr. Kalam’s frustration with Amartya Sen and his protégé Dr. Gopa Sabharwal neither of whom could inspire the confidence of this scientist, himself a former academician.

10. Regarding the project, the Parliamentary Standing Committee in their report for the financial year 2012-13 asked the Ministry of External Affairs to account for the ‘grossly inappropriate allocation of funds since Rs. 2009-10, which is not in consonance with the ground reality.’

11. Strangely for a university located in Bihar, the mentor’s group wanted to have the project office and the department of international studies buildings in New Delhi.

12. When pressed with tough questions by domestic and international press on the irregularities of the project, Dr. Sen blamed the local Bihari media of having a close-minded outlook.

Dude,

Quote me if you know even one person who has got admitted into discipline of experimental surgery in a US based university. Even a cousin 10 generation removed would do.

The truth is that under all that hyperbole of liberalism, equality and tolerance of west run a very strong current of nepotism. West never supply critical technlogy to non-west nations (it readily supply to other fellow westerners), and that is just tip of an iceberg. If you hold an Indian(or any non west) passport you would not get admission in any field which leads to generation of IPR's.

The problem with some/most Indians is that they lack depth of character. West spits on their face and they lick it up as if it is holy prasad just because it was accompanied with sweet words.

As far as political agendas swaying noble prize, the examples which come to my mind are that of Barack Obama, Kailash Satyarthi and malala, Amratya sen, Mother teresa, Joseph stiltz, Jim carter, Liu Xiabo. Though being only in my twenties, and know much about old controversies, but there does not go one year when Nobel prize for Peace and Literature does not create political controversy.Others give rise to controversy occassionally.

Here is a list which you may find interesting.

Nobel Prize controversies - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

These are controversies which blew up. A lot of case where bias or political agenda is involved does not come in political domain as sometime giving it publicity would hurt person against whom it is targeted ,more than the prize itself. That is soft power of country who wield that prize.

Though if you are someone who thinks that Slumdog millionaire was a work of art, all this is wasted upon you.

Just because a certain person is opposed to your Dear Leader and his so called 'Gujrat model' doesn't make his past accomplishments vanish. If you can't argue with his ideas and concepts, just like Bhagwati and co. , there is no need for ad hominem. Don't become a Bhakt.
Please don't quote me in the future. Your last sentence contradicts the very foundation on which you are trying to post.

Mr Sen, the word is "inaction" not "non-action".

The problem can be easily resolved. We should simply ask the Pakistanis to come into India and burn the university to the ground :D
Sen himself has done it already. A high profile university, and the last thing we needed was it's old head from dragging politics into it. In fact we know what happened to the Central Universities during the socialist era. What Nalanda or any University needs is a dynamic, young, dedicated and preferably apolitical scholar.

Modi is a very Bad person:bad:...Known for Terrorism,Killings,Extremism and what not etc....Indians Fellaws should choose someone having a good Repu and Past.Obviously it will help bringing the neighbours closer as well and will also project India as a friendly country/nation no?

Im sure theres zillion with enough Intelligence and Sanity in India!

.
APJ abdul Kalam who first came up with this idea of reviving Nalanda's past glory never became the first visitor?
Abdul Kalam was kicked out by this coterie of Congressi boot lickers.
Sen should not hold any public post in India, if he has any shred of self respect.

Also Sen was the man who wrote the letters to Harvard board for firing Subramaniam Swamy for making 'political statement'. I am not surprised to see this double faced hypocrite doing his things. But he should be a perfect fit in a political party, instead of a head of a body of higher learning.

Essence of arbitrariness in every decision -The New Indian Express

....The Rs 1,005 crore Nalanda University, which is to start functioning by December this year, has no buildings or classrooms. Yet, this doesn’t prevent its management and faculty members from being exempted from paying income tax and enjoy financial autonomy. :enjoy: (Tax Free money to spend on your Roman holiday)

The Comptroller & Auditor General of India (CAG) will not be allowed to question financial decisions taken by the university board after auditing the books. Chancellor Amartya Sen, along with Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia and National Security Advisor Shiv Shankar Menon were present at a meeting where the decision was taken.

The PMO has decided that, “Nalanda University should be given maximum possible financial and administrative autonomy. Specifically, the governing board of the university should be fully empowered to determine salaries and emoluments make appointments and hire its own auditors.” :P

Although, taxpayers will foot the bill of Nalanda University on the pattern of Central Universities, the Planning Commission and PMO have decided to tag it as an ‘International University’ to ward off regulations. :D

Read the whole article.......... its fun :D............. the Nalanda Scam.

Though a funny perspective, but probably not true.

The website you are quoting is a Jew hating anti-Semite website. Rothschild may have introduced him to right selectors at parties, got him job in famous institutes so that he may be considered for the shortlist, made donations to right instituted to get make sure that Sen's name is on mind of selectors when leftist lobby's turn comes etc ( a person who knows how system work could make things easy for you by telling what "not to do"); but their buying Nobel outright is a not possible.
