New York, Nov 28 (bdnews24.com)—Bangladeshi expatriate Quazi Mohammad Rezwanul Hasan Nafis has pleaded not guilty as he refused the charge of 'plotting to blow up' the New York Federal Reserve Bank in October.

The New York Brooklyn Eastern court of Justice Carol Nagley Amon sent the 21-year old Bangladeshi to jail rejecting his bail prayer and fixed Jan 9 for the next hearing the case.

Federal Court's spokesman Robert Nardoza told bdnews24.com that Nafis was presented before the court on Tuesday as the grand jury ordered opening trial against him.

Bangladesh Embassy Consular in Washington Shamsul Hoque and Consul in New York Consulate Md Shahedul Islam were present during the hearing.

Police and FBI arrested Nafis on Oct 17 in a 'sting operation' for what they said his attempt to use 1,000-pound bomb to blow up the Federal bank.

The explosives had been provided to Nafis by an undercover agent as part of a sting operation, and were never in working condition, federal authorities said.

On Nov 15, the grand jury on Brooklyn indicted Nafis for attempting to use weapon of mass destruction and attempting to provide material support to a US-designated foreign terrorist organization, al Qaeda.

He faces life in prison if convicted.

US appointed a lawyer named Heidi Cesare to defend Nafis. Several attempts made by Bangladesh embassy to meet Nafis were turned down. US authorities said Nafis was not willing to talk.

Nafis travelled to the United States in 2012 and enrolled in an University in south-east Missouri. Eventually he moved to Queens, New York before completing his study on Cyber Security. He got admitted at a technical college there in June.

His family has been claiming that Nafis was framed.
