The Myanmar Navy commissioned seven new vessels into service on 24 December 2017, the service’s 70th anniversary.
The vessels included an offshore patrol vessel (OPV), named UMS Inlay (54), two 56 m landing craft utility (LCU) vessels (1614 and 1615), as well as four 29 m landing craft tank (LCT) vessels (1713–1716).
Inlay was built at Thanlyin Naval Dockyard near Yangon with the help of technical assistance and equipment provided by Singapore-based companies. Launched by late November 2015, Inlay had been very largely completed by April 2017.
The OPV is approximately 81 m long with a beam of about 12.5 m and is understood to displace at least 1,500 tons. It is powered by two diesel engines driving two propellers. The OPV is capable of operating a helicopter from its approximately 17.5 m-long flight deck and has a single hangar. A stern ramp is fitted for a rigid-hull inflatable boat.
Armament comprises manually operated 57 mm twin guns in a Type 66 or 76 gun mount on the forecastle as well as two manually operated heavy machine guns atop the hangar deck. Sensors include two Furuno navigation radars. Inlay will supplement the two remaining Danish-built Osprey-class OPVs in service.
The 56 m LCUs – which are based on an old US Navy LCU design – were also built at Thanlyin Naval Dockyard. The LCUs can embark up to five light tanks. The pennant number sequence suggests that 15 of these vessels have been constructed to date.
The 29 m LCTs can transport two armoured fighting vehicles each. Between 2015 and 2017, 16 hulls have been commissioned.
