My views on Modi

Ekjactly!!:D They are two different topics and I do admit my mood changes with the gusts of cool wind I can feel on my face as no bijli right now.

Lol..... With out electricity, at this heat....

@Spectre perhaps you should have given all the reasons for power cuts in Jharkhand, rather than blaming everything on Modi and BJP. The state government in Jharkhand is only an year old, you have to give them some time to sort out the mess that has been left behind by the previous governments.

I think I did! I remember posting about the debt the JSEB has which I admit is a legacy issue but all my anger (some of it irrational) is now focused on Mr. Modi because it is hot as hell in here.

.
My neutral view is that the uncharismatic, squeaking Manhoman was actually far better PM than Modi. It was Manmohan who laid the seeds of a developing India, first as Finance minister and then as PM. Modi is mostly riding the inertia created by Manhoman.

I think Indians mostly like Modi because he seems to be an in-your-face and hardliner sort of guy and have a nervous intensity to him, a trait that Indians may want to see in their leader. Modi, to me, is 'style over substance' who just came when the stage was already set for him.

People see it otherwise. The high growth that India saw during UPA I was actually the fruits of the seed sown by the previous Vajpayee led NDA government.

It is not cutting anyone's share. Do you actually have any proof of increased power cuts, compared to say what it was back during UPA's regime, other than the hearsay of course.

Power production is at an all time high!

I have said that power productionis not an issue. It is just that my poor bhooka nanga state electricity board cannot purchase any power from power generating companies. Hell there is hydroelectricity dam not 100 kms from where I live.

You joined the conversation in the middle of it..... I have no issue of power cut, and for your info I am from a state which did not see powercuts for the past 3 years...... The point was something else.....

Yup exactly, so is it really Modi's fault?

Nah I read the whole thread, you seem to be suggesting that the government should provide uninterrupted power supply to the people who are already connected to the grid first and then go ahead with the rural electrification program. Correct me if I have misunderstood you?

No that was not the point which i wanted to make..... and you have misunderstood
The conversation took a different direction, my first post to this (power) was a question to a poster who suggested there is lot of improvement on power sector, so wanted to know what are all the steps taken in that direction...... But then some one quoted it and got in to a different direction....

Power supply is a state concern, so in this case the captain of your ship would be your CM, and the ship would be your state government

If i understood correctly @Spectre point was simple.... He has BJP govt in state and central..... and Modi has come to his place and committed 24/7 electricity during election time....... If that is the case, there is a reason for being dissappointed

Yes, thats all I have tried to say in the 500+ words here.

All Hype! My state got the supposed Jackpot. BJP in state and centre.

The results

- My town used to get 8 hours of power cut during UPA, we get 9 hours of power cut during BJP. 9 hours is minimum and properly scheduled power cut - as a bonus we always get couple of hours more.

- We used to get 8 hours of water supply during UPA and now we get 4.

- We had a serviceable two lane road merging with GT road but now it is in shambles with no chance for repairs

- We had an ongoing project for construction of Railway station (as of now we have to go 80 kms via bus or car to catch a train, 450 kms for flight) and now that project is halted.

- Utilities are more expensive - 5.5 Rs per unit of electricity vs 4 in UPA. New Water connection requires a bribe of 25k rs and new electricity meter requires a bribe of 11k Rs

- Much more Maoist activity and increase in regular crime

- Food stuff and fuel is more expensive.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now in above scenario why the hell would I or anyone vote for Modi?

Macro economic scenarios like GDP growth rate is irrelevant to common man if his disposable income and savings are shrinking

Rafales are irrelevant if a person feels unsafe to venture out after 7 PM out of his own home

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is why BJP always looses.

I believe you are referring to Jharkhand

The problems you have listed are basically the State government's fault

State governments make a mess in implementation of the Central programmes

Secondly there is every possibility that the previous state government left a mess
of debt and other unsustainable schemes and programmes which the current government is
unable to continue

The Local BJP leadership is guilty of not raising the matter with the Central BJP leadership

Finally ; Jharkhand has always been a a badly managed state right since its inception

Explain please

I have been in the power industry for over a decade and to tell the truth, the sector was stressed to it's balls. State boards didn't have the money to pay the Power generation companies. The major Challenge was infusing liquidity into the sector which was dried of revenue. Electricity is just not a generation, its the single biggest techno economic machine of the country. and other than Gujarat and Chattishgarh were in severe cash deficit.

The problem :
Coal India was not producing enough coal to feed the plants, States were drawing more than their Quota of electricity, driving high UI (unscheduled interchange) resulting in lowering of grid frequency resulting in High revenue loses for generation companies as well as State grids also the state boards were not paying their bills to make matters worse, lowering of frequency also causes inefficiency of system loads resulting in high capacitive and Inductive loses which drove transmission losses higher.

You can infer from the above it was systematic plague. Because of the loss of revenue, generation companies were facing losses, LAB has killed the prospect of new mega scale project coming up. So what you have is
1. low Fuel
2. high energy demand
3. no revenue.
4. mounting pressure of lenders to pay up.
5. Point 4 affected the banking system, increasing NPAs
6. this stalled New investments in the sector
7. Result was other industries linked to power started getting affected. Domino Effect.

The act of destressing an entire sector as huge as the electrical grid (power sector) will take time simply because the entire supply chain (Fuel to electricity) needs to be overhauled that includes the capital supply (debt restructuring, re negotiation of Power purchase agreements). In 2013-14 power sector was on its death bed. To study the dilemma and come up with a remedy is not an easy task, and to pull the sector out of its misery is not an overnight task , quite fankly till 2015 January, i was thinking to migrate to US or EU, hell even Vietnam would have been better.

Now, there are two facets that you look up to a government's work 1. Policy Initiatives. 2 General Perception. For people it might be that my district didn't get electricity hence Modi Government is bad, while from my perspective, the entire power system of the country was staring at bankruptcy and the power economy would have gone Kaput. I am thank full to Piyush Goyal for what he has done, he is god send. He might not have created jobs but he saved me and thousands like me from going jobless and begging on the streets, and saved this country's power sector other wise we would have been largely like Siddharamiya's Bangalore or Like Pakistan's Power scene. Look at the initiative he took to ensure fuel supply to plants to enable the power DisComs to make payments, streamlining of projects, ensuring rule of law in power trading. The sector was on life support previously, now its still sick but its out of ICU, and it will live to see another day.

Hope this explanation is enough. The perception management is something this government is failing, and it will still fail cuz the propaganda is running high from the Delhi Club. This government has still 3 years to go to complete its promises. I'll give this govt its full term to do its work then pass judgements, Piyush is doing an excellent job and I, for one, will be grateful to him.

As I said, I disagree with none of these things but the great right hope Mr. Modi came promised to make it all better and I waited and waited.

I spent the summer of '14, '15 thinking now would be time I can switch on my AC but alas it was not to be. As soon as I switch on my AC, the voltage drops and then fuse blows up - reason the power consumption is more than what the creaky old transformer can handle. Even my trusty old orient pankha has to take long breaks every other hour as the juice runs out.

Now if Modi had not promised I would have no beef with him but since he did, he has become the object of my ire.
