My home for an army base?: Afghan refugees in Mattani refuse to relocate empty-handed

PESHAWAR:
Afghan refugees residing in Mattani refugee camp have voiced deep concern over the directive to vacate an 18-acre plot of land where around 50 houses are located. The refugees have refused to move out without receiving financial compensation in return.

While speaking to The Express Tribune, Haji Rehmatullah, one of the camp elders, said there were around 450 people currently residing in the 50 houses under question. The same locality also houses a hospital, a small market, a school and two mosques.

Rehmatullah admitted the plot of land actually belongs to the Pakistan Army. Two years ago, the refugees negotiated with army representatives with help from the Afghan Embassy, and were given permission to set camp at the site.

“During the negotiations, it was also agreed that in case we were made to shift from the area, for every room we vacate, we will be given Rs20,000 in compensation. This was in addition to the promised plots of land for every affected person to relocate and build his own house. However, the police have ordered us to vacate the land because the army intends on building a base here,” claimed the elder.

He added authorities in the Commissionerate Afghan Refugee, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa were taking the issue personally.

“It is not possible for us to relocate in 72 hours and we have conveyed our concerns to the police. We are poor people, and we will resist any forced attempts at evacuation,” said another elder, Pir Muhammad.

Mattani camp no5 houses a population of around 8,000 people and was established 32 years ago. Most residents of the area hail from Nangarhar in Afghanistan.

“We are not the kind of people who can be accused of being involved in any crime in the district. However, if the police harbour suspicions they should share their observations with us,” he remarked.

Pir Muhammad added people based at the camp are extremely poor, whereas, he claimed, the rich among them had already moved out, mostly to Hayatabad, decades ago.

they should go back to afghanistan, there should not be any place for them in Pakistan..

As even Afghan PM used to live in Pakistan in difficult times, but now he never let any fake opportunity to go away without saying anything bad for Pakistan which hosts him free for so many years.. they are the worst humans ever,

Giving them oxygen to breathe and a life to...............live, eat our bread, and massacre our people....is enough now THROW THEM OUT !!!!!!!

the article also states a quote

I'm sorry elderly man, but this is not Afghanistan......who is he (elderly man) to resist or show resistance to our country.....show this resistance and arrogance to your country's government.....live like a human or get lost to where ever you came from
showing resistance ????eh clear message that they will use firearms to retaliate....enough said

i don't mind these guys living....as long as they live like human beings rather than animals !!!!

India maintains good relations with Afghanistan, how about sending them there :D :D

The Afghan's must seek refuge there (India), many even today have gone for India as an option, as their economy is flourishing and can afford to give them compensations !!!!!!!!!

They are right.

They dont have any resources and can NOT relocate in 18 hours.

either UNHCR has to come forward and help them migrate to Afghanistan and get shelter or relocate to other refugee camp in Pakistan.

Mattani is a notorious area in Peshawar and has been base for many attacks on forces and police.

Pakistan should relocate them in Afghan side of the world, give them some tents and send them there so they can live in peace, create a camp on the border inside afghanistan where we can keep and eye on these guys as well,

We would play the victim card as much as we want to.

And now after accepting all these refugees it is the first and foremost duty of the state of India to accpet Afghan refuges.

Not worth replying......

Law & Order situation is far better in Afghanistan than Pakistan these days, they have civil govt. police and national army, so arrangement should be made to send them back where they belong, If human rights have problem with this than push into their strategic partner territory via wahga border. Richi Rich India have more opportunities for them than Pakistan.
