In the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, the 5,000-odd voters of Sakhri Nate, a Muslim village, took their day off from fishing activities, sacrificing a day’s earning, to vote for Congress candidate Nilesh Rane.
Five years later, the story is different. They have dared Congress leader Narayan Rane and his son Nilesh to enter their village.

On Thursday, the Ranes cancelled their scheduled meeting here when they learnt that people had kept black flags and banners ready to drive them away.

The village is tense and local police held an urgent meeting on Saturday to ensure peaceful polls on April 17.

“There are four sensitive booths in Sakhri Nate. They are going to be manned by special forces coming from Nagpur and Jalna,” said Meghna Burande, police inspector of Nate coastal police station.

Sakhri Nate, a fishing village 40 km from Ratnagiri and situated near Jaitapur Nuclear project, has been protesting against the power plant fearing that the heated water and radiation are likely to affect marine life which, in turn, is bound to hit their fishing activity.

The village with 350 boats sees Rs. 100-crore landing of fish annually.

On April 18, 2011, 30-year-old Tabrez Sayekar from Sakhri-Nate lost his life, and several others were injured when police opened fire on a crowd protesting against the project.

The anger over Tabrez’s death is still burning and the events thereafter have hurt villagers even more.

While taking a walk through the village, one is bombarded with messages of protest. They are on the central well, walls and wherever you turn.

“This was a Congress bastion, but Rane lost it because of his own doing. After the firing, he never visited us or Tabrez’s family,” said Abdul Razak Tamke, 65, who earns Rs. 200-300 a day.

Bilal Mirkar, whose son Mushtaq just missed a bullet, said his family would not mind voting for Shiv Sena to teach Congress a lesson.

We want someone who can understand our issues. Studies in Fukushima and Tarapur show it (the project) affects fishing. We have demanded a three-year marine study, but no one cares,” Mirkar said. Sena has been supporting their protests against Jaitapur plant and this may prove a scoring point for the party in the Lok Sabha election.

It's intriguing why Indian Muslims have been voting the Congress for the past 65 years knowing fully well their vote bank politics. They've been taken for a ride all these years but they refuse to let go of Congress's apron strings.

Are they dumb or is it due to lack of choice?

They had no choice Mickey.
BJP and its hindutwa thing scared of most of the muslims. And their attitude looked pesky.
Now that BJP has become more secular, muslims have turned towards them.

AAP will take away the majority of the Muslim vote. The end times of the Congress Party are very near and this is fabulous news for our nation.

Did BJP become Secular before the Gujarat Massacre or after ?

I am not a big BJP supporter. But let me tell you BJP was more secular than Congress when it came to power in the center.

BJP was always secular(considering the actual definition of the term not the vote bank appeasement kind of thing practised in India by other parties) it never advocated religion playing a major role in affairs of state.

That being said BJP will never drop its hindutva agenda(Ram Mandir, UCC etc) it simply can't as BJP doesn't have cadres and volunteers of its own neither have they made any significant attempt to build it over the years and for that it heavily relies on far right groups like RSS, VHP, BD members etc to do the ground work without them BJP is like thin air completely nonexistent

Congress despite letting countless religious violence happening under its watch is still secular then why not bjp

Quite right BJP never intends to make Sunnis their ovate bank their main aim is to divide sunni votes among various "secular" parties like Congress, AAP, Jamat, Owaisis, Left, SP etc when sunnis whatever small percent of Muslim votes is like bonus

The fundamental problem is Muslims vote as a religion rather than as individuals. Which is why they always get the wrong end of the bargain.

AAP is offering them the same nonsense that Congress is offering them. I was there during Delhi elections in Delhi and some of my old friends from school had volunteered to join AAP and work for them. Many including some I didn't know, left the party as soon as they were confronted with the questions from muslim areas saying 'hamari qaum ke kiye kya karoge'?

Who then isolates themselves? Is it the majority who say " main vote karoonga/nahi karoonga?" or these people?

Voting as a process is meant for individual citizens of the country. Which means that he or she has the power to think, analyze, assess and then caste their votes. In Muslim community, this is frowned upon, especially among Sunnis and Bareilvis that dominate their demography compared to the more rational and liberal Borhis, Qadianis, Sufis, Ismailis, Ba'hais and Shiite groups.

If they were communal, the riots would have spread across India rather than controlled in two days.

Why agreed? Do you know what riots took place before they came? Were Congress ruled states always peaceful? Prove it if you have any evidence.

Standard Congress story for the past 10 years. Win the votes of a certain community today and alienate them tomorrow. Congress needs a major overhaul of its leadership. Hopefully Rahul will be in a position to align the party with reality now that he most probably will be sitting as the opposition leader

Do you think I dont know of Sikh massacre??? I do know of Rajiv Gandhi's very famous quote "when a huge tree falls the earth shakes".

But the topic was BJP.
BJP was also found with its hands in the cookie jar.
And this video should prove my point.
Vajpayee had very clearly dropped a hint that Modi was involved in Godhra.
