Fars News Agency :: Muslims Protest against Hijab Ban in Southeastern Turkey

n00076709-b.jpg

TEHRAN (FNA)- A large number of Muslim
residents of the Southeastern Turkish city of
Urfa rallied on Monday in protest at the
Hijab (Islamic code of dressing) ban in their
country.

The protesters, which included school girls,
veiled women and members of several non-
governmental organizations, gathered in front
of Urfa's Education Administration.

They chanted slogans in support of the
Islamic dress code (Hijab), and called for
lifting the Hijab ban in Turkey's schools.
Head of the Turkish NGO Assembly for
Mobilization of Islamic Hijab, Saleh Demir,
read a statement issued by protesters at the
end of the gathering.

The new law on Hijab ban has practically
forbidden the women to wear Hijab and
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan
by approving this law has obstructed
freedoms of religion and belief and there is
no difference between Erdogan's Islamist
government and the previous secular
governments of Turkey, the statement read.

The Hijab ban was implemented after a coup
on February 28, 1997. It has been applied to
the public sector as well as the universities,
schools, and educational centers.

Despite electoral promises, Turkish
government officials, whose Islamic Justice
Party has been in power in the last 10 years,
have not taken any practical measures to lift
the ban.

. . . . . . .
The Hijab ban was taken off for quite some time now. Which world is FNA living in?

.
I guess the ban is yet to be removed constitutionally. Students can now wear hijab in unis and publicly if I am not wrong. The title by far news is misleading.

Only parliament doesnt allow it yet. Some private businesses dont employ those women, but that is not law-related issue.

. .
As far as I know Mr. Erdogan lifted the kelamist imposed hijab ban. Is this a fake news?

it is no totally a fake nwes but some exaggerated....thanks to ruling Erdogan's AKP hijab ban limited to low level..But it is still continue in some offical institutions like Judiciary..for exe. Women judges stil cannot enter trail with hijab...

once, especially in 90s islamic women and girls under brutal oppresions of Mlitary Generals...thousands girls dismissed from school sand universitiyes..ten thousand muslim girls compelled to give up education...many of them had to go abroad for thier educations...

From many aspects, 90s years that army generals dominate all politic and economic activities was the most darkness times of Turkey. as result Turkey dumped in its bigest economic crises and borrowed the foreigners till its bone..

But it is a realty that, there are still some remnants of hijab ban had emposed by army generals who many of them now in jail with accusetion of committing military coup againist AKP.

and now, democratization of turkey non-stop continues..

Why? DO "liberal" democracies like US and UK bens Hijab in parliament? Why can't an elected representative wear clothes as per her wish. What kind of democracy do seculars in tyrkey champion and defend?

Hope this ban totally gets lifted. DO the new constitution that AKP is trying to formulate lifts this ban?
