‘Muslims need to assimilate into Europe’

Btw it is at best a representation of pure idiocy if this logic is applied to Muslims. It isn't asking too much out of every person of every faith and belief to conform to represent the idealogy of today's general (note the word general) population : live and let live.

It isn't a good means of 'preemption against suicide bombers' at all - a suicide bombers vest can be hidden under a coat/jacket etc.

Apparently they have a propensity to wear ladies outwear.. Go figure.

Let me for try this for the last time with you here :) w/ an another example :

certain grades of fertilizers are not sold anymore to farmers and even how much you can buy, is heavily regulated in europe and US.

Can they make bombs from normal fertilzers? yes --- does that mean they should allow the higher grades to be sold openly? _ No.

Trenchcoat= lower grade , burqa= higher grade

couple of points.

first, the indian hallucinogenicists on here - hijab is as valid as a turban, both can be construed as non-conformational. the niqab is without equal, but a very small number of muslims wear it in any case. Are the Indians on some form of hallucinogenic is my question here?

on the subject of the thread, do Muslims need to assimilate into Europe. Difficult to say, as the text of the article does not seem to have anything to do with assimilation.

I'd even suggest the Hijab is not worn by the majority of Muslim women in the west, and a beard is not grown by the majority of Muslim men in the west. From a conformational point of view, the article is a poor generalization created by people who are not very intelligent.

Personally speaking i'm not against any form of dress.

He said Muslim youths were attracted to revivalism as there was no alternative ideology to capitalism

This has become the problem in the first world countries, there is no alternative ideology to Capitalism!!!!!!!!!!! Look at these stupid demonstrators in the Wall Street and around the World, it clearly shows the dependency to others. Likewise, Muslims need to create there own identity in areas other then religion...........

First we should decide if we are talking about immigrants or born citizens. In the first case, the onus is on the immigrant to conform but, for born citizens, especially later generations, the debate changes drastically.

The question then becomes whether some citizens have a right to change the 'predominant culture'. Was it acceptable for pro-choice citizens to lobby for abortion rights? How about prayer in school (for or against)? Or use of certain religious texts in court rooms? In all these cases, the proponents of change were going against the 'dominant culture'. We don't hear much about it, but many of the challenges to overt Christian symbolism in the US/Canada come from Jewish plaintiffs.

What makes these citizens more equal than the Muslim ones?

“Revivalists don’t pose a threat to the West, but to the imperialist hegemony of the West”.

Bingo!

If Muslim countries were stronger by themselves and halfway competent in resisting the West's (or anyone else's) hegemony, there would be less cause for 'revenge', and Muslim extremism in the West would lose steam.

Revenge from What??? Please explain based on this thread alone.........

Thanks........

Many people around the world, Muslim and others, feel that Western culture is intruding upon their indigenous culture and lifestyle. So some Muslim conservatives feel it is only right for them to challenge Western culture 'at the source' as a tit-for-tat.

Btw, I noticed I brought in the concept of extremism by mistake -- we should probably get the discussion back to ordinary Muslims who fail to 'assimilate'.

Media selectivity would be the main reason.

Whip up a frenzy about Muslims, prey on those subconscious xenophobic feelings a lot of people harbour to generate some anti Muslim emotion. Media ploy.

There wasn't huge uproars regarding Sikhs and their motorcycle helmets but there was no real media focus on them.

go capetown and you will see british descendents still living same as they did in the 17th century when they first arrived there and they dont marry locals..
same for latinos in USA...
Why everybody is hell bent on forcing muslims to lose their identity...i cannot undestand.

But aren't the second and third generation immigrants assimilating into the host country culture leading to a clash with first generation?

example What makes parents murder their daughters? | Blog | DAWN.COM

Generational conflict is not confined to immigrants or Muslims; these disagreements happen for most families anyway. What is unacceptable is the use of force to settle disputes, which definitely has a cultural component that needs to be addressed.

Exactly. There are many 'demands' for change to culture by immigrants groups other than Muslims, but they barely get a mention outside of community news leaflets. The hysteria only makes it to the mainstream media when Muslims are involved.

Exactly. Nobody complains about lack of 'assimilation' by Hassidic Jews or the Amish community. Why Muslims?

The fault partly lies with Muslims in the West. We have neglected to participate in media fields; it is the media which controls a nation's mindset and which is the main driver of Islamophobia.

Muslims need to assimilate into Europe

Its more like the muslim countries need to consolidate their own position.

if the law of the land forbids me from wearing head scarf...an action which is totally private and in no way effects any other human or creature...then i have the right to break this type of law,as it defies reason and common sense..
If the law of Pakistan says that ahmadis can't be Muslims because they differ in one point then ahmadis have the right to call themselves Muslims, as it's a personal belief and in no way affects others. They have the right to break the law as it defies reason and common sense.....
