Musharraf faces exile in Britain: Report
IANS 1 August 2009, 06:00pm IST

LONDON: Former Pakistan president Pervez Musharraf, who has been ruled guilty of illegally imposing emergency two years ago, faces exile in
Britain because his presence may destabilize the country, a British newspaper reported on Saturday.

Musharraf, a former military general who was ousted from power in August 2008, has been in Britain for the past two months and is reported to be on a luxury cruise. He is also reported to have bought an expensive apartment in London.

Now, The Guardian said, he may have to extend his stay in Britain - a move made at the urging of Pakistan's army chief General Ashfaq Kayani.

It said that although unlikely, Musharraf could be prosecuted on grounds of treason after Pakistan's Supreme Court said this week the former president's imposition of national emergency in 2007 was illegal.

Musharraf, who suspended the constitution as part of emergency provisions in November 2007, did not appear for the hearing, choosing to remain in London. However, the Supreme Court also turned down a petition by a lawyer to try the former president for treason.

Treason prosecution was also unlikely, said The Guardian, "because any move would have to be initiated by the government, which is keen to avoid confrontation with the powerful military". Punishment for high treason in Pakistan includes death.

Talat Masood, a retired general and former Musharraf confidante, told the paper that Musharraf was unlikely to return to Pakistan soon. "He will stay away and the army will advise him to stay away. I hear he's on a luxury cruise. I think that might be extended for some time," Masood said.

Cyril Almeida, a political analyst, said: "My gut feeling is that Musharraf isn't a guy to live in exile permanently. He will return at some point but right now the political heat is too much. His presence in the country is seen as being too destabilising."

If the report is correct, Musharraf will join a long line of Pakistani political leaders who have had to seek exile in Britain because of political instability and threats to their lives in their home country.

These leaders have included former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, who was assassinated when she returned; her husband Asif Ali Zardari, the current president; the country's main opposition leader Nawaz Sharif and Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) leader Altaf Hussain.

Hussain, a powerful figure in the province of Sindh who is blamed for fomenting violence in Pakistan, continues to live in London.

Saudi Arabia offers asylum to Musharraf
PTI 1 August 2009, 08:03pm IST

SLAMABAD: As Pervez Musharraf appeared headed for trouble in the wake of the Supreme Court declaring his imposition of emergency in 2007 as
unconstitutional, Saudi Arabia has said it would consider offering political asylum to Pakistan's former military ruler if he made a request.

65-year-old Musharraf, who is abroad on a lecture tour, refused to comment on the the apex court's landmark verdict on Saturday when a TV news channel contacted him.

The former Pakistan President said he would give his reaction only after reading the verdict.

Adding another twist to the affair, Saudi Ambassador Abdul Aziz bin Ibrahim Al Ghadeer, meanwhile, told reporters that his country would consider giving Musharraf political asylum if the former military ruler made a request.

Though the prospect of Musharraf, who is reportedly in Europe, being brought to trial appears unlikely at the moment, anyone accused of violating the Constitution can be tried for treason if the federal government decides to seek such proceedings.

Musharraf, who has been living abroad since he left Pakistan in mid-April to deliver a series of lectures around the world, continues to enjoy the backing of the powerful army which he once led.

Though leaders of the influential lawyers' movement have been calling for Musharraf to be tried for treason, the civilian government is unlikely to have a confrontation with the army over the issue.

Iss tarah to hota hai iss tarah k kamoN maiN

Instead of chasing him, it is enough for him to be deprived of his motherland.

i use to be a big time hardcore mush fan but today i hate him like anything! he deserves this along with many politicians whom he let groom under his nose... look what musharraf left in the country! as much i hate mush now its so sad to see these loser judges become fake heros...

when SC took up case against Musharraf many jihadi organisations got active and there are also reports that they might eyeing to kill Musharraf so i think in such a situation he cant return for sometime.

Exactly, cared his country by giving up on Kashmir stance by Killing hundreds of young innocent kids and women and ofcours doing Karghil after which Pakistan is on the defensive. No talk of corruption and why national debt increased many folds, no electricity, water, food in the country and also that during his rule Pakistan was declared the third most corrupt nation in the world. He is rightful in wearing the Crown of National Service.

Political Exile? Hang Him!

Musharraf is used assert who knows a lot more than he actually should. Look at King of Iran, Look at Saddam Hussein and Now Musharraf is also going to be added to the list. Keeping Musharraf alive would be against the interest of the "Boss". He is a brave person with skull filled with Gun Powerder instead of brain and he was the person who used to think, there are only few wise people in Pakistan and all are around him. LOL.

I know he would be reading such content to kill his free time.. If he reads this post, I would encourage him to write another book and tell his countrymen what not to do in life and who is Nation's Friend and Who Not! Reveal! Its about the time!

That is terrible to know, but the government hasn't stripped him from being ex-president. he will be protected and that is what matters. We don't want another Zia mystery assassination on our hands it is in the interest of the nation to protect Musharraf even though he may have committed many wrong doings.

But I could not understand why he did not defend his case. He should have sent his legal team to defend his case. This does matter because now he looks weak politically since he made no moves to defend himself. Rather unwise and very dangerous Pakistani politics is very unforgiving to those who give up.

Musharaf is not Dumb my friend. He knows what sins he has committed. Even the incident of Lal Mosque alone is enough for him to get Hanged in the court. Musharraf has many guts in him which many of our politicians don't. As an angry Pakistani, I want to see him hanging but there could better use of his body then filling up a grave.

Dear Pakistani brothers,

please explain how Musharaf who is often loved and popular (i.e. friends and lovers of Mush) can "suddenly" become so despised? Didn't he help build and unify Pakistan? Is this a sudden COVERT character-assassination operation?

Seems those who put Zardari in power (not the people!) are the same who are going after Musharaf. Seen this played out in many countries. Those who have strong Zionist support receive IMMUNITY for their crimes, while those who countered Zionists during their term are HUNTED LIKE ANIMALS.

That is my observation, please share yours. :guns:

Seems to me he was "dumb" since he made so many careless decisions which are now digging his own grave (from the looks of things). As I said I think this too was one of his bad decisions to not challenge the Supreme court. He made it easy for the bench to decide the case against him, now this is part of history.

As for hanging Musharraf that is quite barbaric. Musharraf's punishment should be the same as that he gave to his political rivals; jails, house arrest, using armoured police cars to take him to court, defiantly life imprisonment for taking part in treason.

This is your jazbaat speaking. Pakistan has been raped and pillaged in much more brazen manner than anything you can pile up under Musharraf. Currently, true to our form, the nation is angry at the "Jernail" who is being blamed for all of the past sins as if the decade of the 90s had nothing to do with setting back the Pakistan of today. Our nation is always angry because the leaders never take charge and the buck passes on to anyone over whom the nation can vent. The PPP and PML-N must be thanking their lucky stars that they can blame the past military leadership since they are clearly incapable of dealing with Pakistan's challenges and know that in the face of this failure, the only salvation lies with keeping the nation distracted on the personalities of the past who in actuality have done much less harm than what their current inaction or action is doing.

In any case, hold on to your emotions because soon enough you will have to say the same about the two thieves who are visiting (as does a curse) Pakistan, namely Zardari and Nawaz Sharif. When these two gents go through their reigns of pillage and raping, then the sins of Musharraf will be forgotten and then he will reappear on the scene kicking these two assholes back into banishment. So all in all its not a bad thing for him to remove himself from the scene. The amazing, 30% literate awaam of Pakistan have to go through the ignominy of the Zardari and NS reigns before they can forget about the Jernail. So be it. It probably is a blessing in disguise for Musharraf.

Remember "TIA"? Well This Is Pakistan!!!!

What is this bit about treason? What is more treasonous than siphoning away millions and billions away from a nangi, bhooki, deprived, starving, illiterate awaam of Pakistan to fatten up ones foreign bank accounts?? Who is more guilty of this ultimate treason? Why is disregard for a bloody paper worth more than the crimes of those who have taken this miserable and unfortunate nation of ours to starvation and bankruptcy?

I am not sure where the priorities of our intelligentsia are who are nowadays going totally bonkers over this constitutional treason issue. What will it do to the common man on the street? I would buy this argument if other more important things were also getting the same attention and support.

Ours is a nation of opportunist. All those who are railing on Musharraf are guilty of crimes which are much more perverse and damaging to the nation than Musharraf's disregard for a piece of paper which has been written, re-written, abrogated, held in abeyance and then restored (multiple times mind you).

There is a stench of provincialism in this whole affair and its all about revenge now. Had this been about justice, the face of it would be very difficult as justice bridges the rifts, not exacerbate them as this whole treason tamasha is bound to.

he is and will remain popular in heart of majority Pakistan.
He is an honest and brave person. He put Pakistan on track to growth and progress.
All patriots are his supporters but politicians get rich by the finances of anti state elements, hence they are bound to oppose him.
You are right, all what is happening is actually part of one same chain.
Now it is for every one to see how Pakistan's is beeing pushed to self destruction on fast track by its (unpopular) ruler.
