Melbourne/Perth: A multi-million dollar newly built Sikh Gurudwara in Perth, Australia was vandalised by two girls and painted with obscene anti-Muslim graffiti. The Gurudwara has been in construction for over two years in Bennnett Springs and was likely to open next year.
In a CCTV footage two masked girls, dressed in black clothing, were seen spraying anti-Muslim slurs on the walls of the Gurudwara. They reportedly vandalised the Gurudwara property and also damaged security cameras that were installed in the premises. According to The Daily Mail, the girls confused the Gurudwara for a mosque and painted racial slurs on its walls.
"We are from India, particularly from Punjab, we have got no relation with any other religion. We are Sikhs and our religion is totally different from any other religion," the pastor Satjit Singh was quoted as saying. He also said the vandalism was very upsetting and the damage could cost up to USD 50,000 to repair.
The treasurer of the Gurdwara, Aman Deep Singh, said it was very hurtful. "Whoever has done this, he has done a shameful act, and also, please get your knowledge right," Aman Deep said. "Make the difference between Arabs and Sikhs and above all we all are here, we have left our businesses, jobs. They have done so much damage. They have not actually just done the damage to this temple, they have done the damage to the whole country," he said.
This incident comes just weeks after two mosques in Perth city and an Islamic school was targetted similarly; a graffiti on a wall read “ban Islam”.
