Renowned religious scholar Mufti Mohammed Naeem passed away at a private hospital in Karachi on Saturday, a Jamia Binoria spokesperson said.
He said that Mufti Naeem was suffering from heart and lung ailments and had been taken to the hospital at 8:30pm.
Mufti Naeem was the head of Jamia Binoria — an international Deobandi seminary where a large number local and foreign students study.
Prime Minister Imran Khan expressed his grief and offered condolences over the cleric's death. He also offered prayers for the deceased.
Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif called Mufti Naeem's death "terrible news".
"The nation has lost a distinguished religious scholar whose services for the promotion of Islamic education will continue to be remembered for a long time. My heartfelt condolences to his family & students. May Allah rest his soul in peace," he said in a tweet.
Information minister Shibli Faraz said Mufti Naeem was one of the "top religious guides of this country".
In a statement, Sindh Governor Imran Ismail expressed his grief over Mufti Naeem's death. "He dedicated his whole life to teaching Islam and made Jamia Binoria a world-class institution."
He had thousands of foreign students, he said, adding that the loss of Mufti Naeem was something that couldn't be replaced for a long time.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah also expressed his grief over the scholar's demise. Mufti Naeem always helped the government in times of difficulty, he said. The chief minister also offered prayers for the deceased.
Pakistan Awami Tehreek chief Dr Tahirul Qadri said the deceased was "indeed an esteemed religious scholar and a promoter of interfaith harmony."
