ISLAMABAD: The PML-N has placed tough conditions before the PPP for inclusion of the MQM in the federal government.
"An unconditional public apology on the part of the MQM for its past role and a guarantee not to repeat the May 12 actions is the only choice to include its members in the central government," sources privy to the discussions between two parties revealed to The News here on Thursday.
The PML-N negotiators and Nawaz Sharif himself described the MQM as worse than Q-League and told the PPP leadership to keep it away from the federal government in order to maintain unity among the coalition partners.
"The PML-N will remain part of the government at the Centre if the demands are accepted," sources quoted its negotiating members as telling the PPP team in talks held after telephonic conversation between Asif Ali Zardari and Altaf Hussain.
The PML-N turned down the offer of the PPP to be part of the Sindh government by accepting position of adviser to the chief minister."We rejected this offer and conveyed our reservations over the MQM's past role during the last nine years."
The PML-N, sources maintained, repeatedly described the MQM worst than the PML-Q."We can sit with the MQM at the Centre and at provincial level only if its leadership tenders a public apology and give up its so-called claim over Karachi and urban areas of Sindh," sources said.
In reply to a question, sources said the PML-N also expressed its great resentment over Asif Ali Zardari's act of not taking Nawaz Sharif into confidence after having a telephonic conversation with Altaf Hussain.
"There is no possibility of the PML-N to sit with the PPP at the Centre or in Sindh if the Muttahida does not come up with an apology to the nation and prepares itself to play a democratic role in future," the sources added.
"From the PML-N's point of view, this is the first and last solution to make the MQM part of the federal government, otherwise, we would not hesitate to break the alliance with the PPP."The PML-N, the sources said, conveyed to the negotiators that it would part ways with the PPP in case the MQM is brought in at any stage without apology.
"We told the PPP that our parliamentarians would support it as far as legislation is concerned but would not be part of the government in the presence of the MQM as it is impossible for us to sit with those who have been backing Pervez Musharraf."
Responding to a question, the PML-N sources said PPP Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari has given an assurance not to include the MQM at the Centre."The PPP-PML-N alliance is much more important than ministerial portfolios to the MQM." The PML-N leadership has also taken the ANP into confidence over its demand for a public apology from the MQM.
