MQM asks urban residents to brace for struggle - thenews.com.pk

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement has urged the residents of Sindh’s urban areas to brace themselves for a struggle for their rights, maintaining that the Pakistan People’s Party had discriminated against them through biased legislation in the provincial assembly.

“The PPP has been confined to Sindh after suffering a crushing defeat in the recent elections is now fighting for its survival,” Engr Nasir Jamal, the deputy convener of the MQM, said on Wednesday.

“Under such circumstances, the narrow-minded provincial leadership of the PPP with its prejudiced policy is busy creating misunderstanding and hatred among the permanent residents of Sindh.”

Jamal maintained that the local government bill passed in the Sindh Assembly on Monday clearly reflected the anti-people policy of the PPP.

“The PPP should realise that the ground realities have changed; the ratio of population in Sindh has changed altogether and the urban population has exceeded the rural. All statistics available support our claim.”

The MQM leader said if the PPP could seek the United Nations’ help in the investigation into the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, the urban population of Sindh was also justified in demanding a population census, fresh de-limitation of constituencies, and polls under the supervision of the UN.

“As the urban population of Sindh has been deprived of their rights following the population census carried out under the supervision of prejudiced people, the urban population should get ready to launch a struggle for its rights.”

Power tariff

Jamal condemned the 15 and 56 percent increase in power tariff for domestic and industrial consumers, respectively, in different cities of the country.

“The masses including traders and industrialists, were expecting that the new government would provide them with relief and basic facilities, but greatly disappointed when the water and power ministry increased the power tariff for the domestic and industrial consumers.”

He said at a time when the masses were feeling the pressure of the sky-rocketing prices of essential commodities, the government’s move to increase the power tariff was tantamount to oppressing the people.

Jamal demanded that the government should immediately withdraw the “illogical” increase in the power tariff and provide relief to the people by allowing them a subsidy in electricity charges.

Playing the Sindh card may not work well for the PPP at this time nor will political manoeuvring as MQM has managed to get hold of certain Sindhi politicos recently and inducted them into their ranks.

99% of the sindh revenue generated by Karachi while the rurals governs the entire sindh

this is discrimination

Wish to see the good , educated and non fuedal PPP candidates join forces with MQM like Nabeel Gabol did ... liberate sindh from the shackels of fuedal lords.

This is democracy, one person, one vote. not one rupee, one vote.

you have very naive view of democracy

no democracy in the world functions without a local government system, even in socialist states like china, iran, there is devolution of power to the local government

if you call it democracy why afraid to implement the actual democratic system

and we all know where the votes in rural comes from, people are forced to vote for land lords unlike urban areas

its not like they have a choice
