Moscow has the greatest number of billionaires of any city in the world, according to a global rich list, with London in fifth place.

The Russian capital – known for its oligarch ghettos and glitzy boutiques - can boast 76 dollar billionaires, compared to New York's 70 and Hong Kong's 54. London comes fifth with 40, just behind Beijing with 41.

The list, compiled by Chinese luxury publishing group Hurun Report, found the United States has the greatest number of uber-wealthy with 409 billionaires, compared to China's 317 and third-place Russia with 88. The UK trails in fifth place with 56 "members of the Nine-Zero Club".

Carlos Slim, 73, the Mexican telecoms tycoon, takes top spot as the "Richest Man on the Planet" with a staggering personal fortune of $66bn (£43bn). Second comes US investor Warren Buffet, 82, with $58bn. Microsoft owner Bill Gates places fourth with $54bn.

Moscow's reputation as a fountain of new wealth since the fall of the Soviet Union was enhanced once more as it was ranked billionaire capital of the world.

Steel magnate and Arsenal Football Club shareholder Alisher Usmanov is the richest Russian on the list with $19bn, followed by Viktor Vekselberg, the metals and energy tycoon best known abroad for being the world's foremost collector of Faberge eggs. He has $18bn.

While the average wage in Russia remains low, at about 26,500 roubles (£570) per month, income disparity is high and a caste of super-wealthy politically-connected businessman - often known as oligarchs - grew out of the opaque privatisation of state property in the 1990s.

Hurun said that 100 per cent of the Russians on its list of 1,453 billionaires were "self-made", compared to many with inherited wealth in other European countries.

Moscow's richest residents frequently live on the Rublevka highway west of the city, a neighbourhood of luxury villas and walled compounds where Lamborghinis, yellow diamonds and Gucci handbags can be bought at local shops.

The youngest person on the billionaires list was Facebook founder Mark Zuckerburg, 28, ranking 42nd with $17bn.
