Moscow Has Right to Place Nuclear Weapons in Crimea

Donetsk and Lugansk are gone from Ukraine forever. Ukraine taking Donetsk and Lugansk would be harder than Arabs driving Israel out of the ME.

According to Minsk agreements, elections will be held in Donetsk and Lugansk regions.

Ukrainian establishment will keep things under control in Maripuol, Kharkiv, Odessa and fortified them. Now they wont repeat the early mistakes.

Russia turned Crimea into a military base: Tatar leader | Zee News
Last Updated: Friday, March 20, 2015 - 04:07

United Nations: In just one year, Crimea has gone from being a picturesque tourist destination in Ukraine to a Russian military base that will likely end up hosting nuclear weapons, the United Nations heard Thursday.

Prominent Soviet-era dissident Mustafa Dzhemilev, spiritual leader of Crimea`s minority Tatar ethnic group, also said that the rights situation on the peninsula had deteriorated drastically since Moscow took over Crimea a year ago, sparking condemnation in the West.

"Crimea that used to be a tourist area is being turned into a military base... and the most alarming is that Crimea is likely to return into a nuclear weapons base," Dzhemilev told a press conference at UN headquarters in New York.

"There are no freedoms and rights in Crimea right now... those who stand up for their beliefs, and first of all for their willingness to go back to become part of Ukraine, are being repressed."

Between 10,000 and 15,000 Tatars -- a minority Muslim community with a distinct language and culture -- have fled Crimea since the Russian flag was raised there.

Dzhemilev was invited to the UN by Lithuania, a member of the UN Security Council, to attend an informal closed meeting on Crimea`s human rights situation.

The meeting was boycotted by Russia, which considers the Crimea an integral part of its territory.

Besides Russia, two other members of the Security Council -- China and Venezuela -- did not send a representative to the meeting.

Russian troops deployment in Crimea to put end to diplomacy - U.S Department of State| Ukrinform

KYIV, March 20 /Ukrinform/. Crimea has been and remains a part of Ukraine, so any increase in military activity in its territory will be considered as an attempt to undermine the peace process of settling the Ukrainian crisis.

Spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State Jen Psaki said this at a briefing on Thursday, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

"Any Russian military exercises or weapons deployments in Crimea, which is part of Ukraine, would further undermine securing a peaceful, diplomatic resolution to a crisis that Russia started with its forcible seizure and ongoing occupation of Ukraine's Crimean peninsula," Psaki said when asked to comment on the deployment Russian military forces and armaments in Crimea.

She stressed that the US position remains firm: "We reiterate that Crimea remains a sovereign Ukrainian territory. We don't recognize, as all of you know, Russia's purported annexation."

Danger of large-scale conflict in Black Sea region increasing - Poroshenko| Ukrinform

KYIV, March 19 /Ukrinform/. Making a military hub of Crimea, placing the missiles capable of carrying nuclear weapons significantly increases the danger of a full-scale conflict in the Black Sea region.

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko has said this in an interview with Euronews.

"It [Crimea] is already a military hub, as far as I understand from the statement of the Russian President that they placed missiles there, which are capable of carrying nuclear weapons... This is increasing significantly the danger of a full-scale conflict in the Black Sea region. Because these missiles have a range of 500 kilometers that can easily reach several NATO member states and that should prompt a certain reaction," Poroshenko said.

He also noted that Russia systematically violated human rights in Crimea.

Russia never threatened to use nukes over situation in Crimea - Kremlin spokesman - Interfax

MOSCOW. April 2 (Interfax) - Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov has described reports in British media alleging that Moscow is threatening to use its nuclear forces if attempts are made to return Crimea to Ukraine or if NATO steps up its presence in the Baltic States as "a classic example of Russia's demonization."

"This is a classic example of the ongoing hysteria to demonize our country. In fact, they blow the situation out of proportion in informational terms themselves, and they are doing this not based on any particular information, and then they themselves fear what they have written," Peskov told journalists on Thursday.

"These reports can't be taken seriously," he said.

If I am not mistaken, the transition to Russian citizenship was completed in autumn. 3.5 thousand people, however, prefer to stay in the Ukrainian citizenship.

The most underestimated and dangerous flashpoint in the world right now. We see a lot of bloodshed in various parts of of the world. It is all very predictable. The conflict between Russia and US/EU is a different ballgame. You have powers that can really cause serious damage not only to themselves, but the world.

Although, I don't think that US/EU have the appetite to wage a military conflict. Russia is an entirely different beast. Russia isn't Iraq nor Afghanistan which could be invaded and humiliated without blinking an eye. Russia is militarily very capable and can take on Europe on its own. That's just to put it mildly. NATO and British think tanks have already admitted this fact which speaks volume.

Economic sanctions is the only way the US/EU can counter Russia, but that is only a halfhearted attempt. There isn't much that the US/EU can do to hurt Russia. Goes to show how important military might is.

The Russians annexed Crimea right before the eyes of the entire world and no one could even lift a finger. Goes to show that Russia means business.

Russia illegally annexed the Ukrainian territory of Crimea in March 2014

UNIAN: Russia sees nothing to prevent it deploying nuclear weapons in the occupied Ukrainian territory of Crimea, the Permanent Representative of Russia to NATO Alexander Grushko has said during a video conference between Moscow and Brussels.

"Everything that we do in Crimea fully complies with all obligations of the Russian Federation under international treaties. We do not violate anything, there are no prohibitions on us deploying certain weapons systems," Grushko said when asked whether Russia is planning to deploy nuclear weapons in the Ukrainian territory of Crimea, which Russia illegally annexed in March 2014.

Grushko did not answer a further question from UNIAN's correspondent on whether nuclear weapons have already been deployed in the peninsula.

Grushko said that the Russian fleet has been in the Crimea for 200 years, having in its structure not only sea components, but also powerful air and ground components.

Russia intends to strengthen its forces in the Crimea in view of the fact that NATO countries have recently increased their military activities near the Russian borders, Grusko added. He also said that Russia plans to modernize the fleet, which he said had always been prevented by Ukraine in the past.

Recently, the director of department on non-proliferation and arms control of the Russian Foreign Ministry Mikhail Ulianov stated that Russia is considering the deployment of nuclear weapons in Crimea.

On May 13, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that the alliance has been concerned about the possible deployment of Russian nuclear weapons on the peninsula.

He also stressed that NATO condemned the extensive deployment by Russia of its troops in the occupied Ukrainian territory of Crimea.

Russia deploys nuclear fleet in Crimea - Turchynov| Ukrinform
KYIV, May 20 /Ukrinform/. Russia continues to deploy additional offensive weapon systems in the occupied Crimea and to prepare the infrastructure to station nuclear weapons and means for their delivery on the peninsula.

Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Oleksandr Turchynov has said this in an interview with Ukrinform.

"Russia is taking specific steps to provide the full-fledged operation of the units of the 12th Main Directorate of the Defense Ministry of the Russian Federation on the peninsula. This directorate is tasked to prepare the operation and supplies of nuclear munitions to the combat units of the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Federation," Turchynov said.

According to him, Russia plans to deploy in Crimea a regiment of Tu-22M3 attack aircraft, equipped to carry nuclear warhead missiles. In addition, the unit will include three divisions of Iskander-K and Iskander-M Tactical Ballistic Missile System, including some equipped with nuclear warhead missiles.

Turchynov added that Russia also intended to complete the deployment of a powerful submarine fleet base in Crimea.

Russia might deploy nuclear weapons delivery systems - Breedlove| Ukrinform

KYIV, May 22 /Ukrinform/. Russia has deployed systems which may be used to deliver nuclear weapons in eastern Ukraine.

NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe General Philip Breedlove made such a statement, Radio Svoboda reports.

"Majority of nuclear weapons delivery systems, used by Russia, is dual-use equipment: for conventional and nuclear weapons. Some of them have already been placed," he said.

The General said that NATO called irresponsible signals from Russia about the deployment of nuclear weapons on the territory of the annexed Crimea.

"We believe the media reports on deployment in Crimea and possibility of use of nuclear weapons to be irresponsible on part of Russia being the nuclear state. At the same time, we actually have not seen any direct changes, but that does not mean they can not happen," Breedlove emphasized.

He also said that NATO did not know anything about the plans for deployment of missile defense systems in Ukraine.
