Monkey to Inherit House, Garden, Trust Fund - India Real Time - WSJ

ANI

An Indian couple is planning to bequeath their estate to a pet monkey.

The childless couple, based in Rae Bareli in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, adopted the baby monkey after it lost its mother in a bad fall.

Now they have decided to leave their house, a 200-yard plot of land, and their savings to the monkey who is called Chunmun, according to a report by local news channel ANI.

“Chunmun is like a son to us,” says Savita Brajesh, who first spotted the baby monkey and its mother. But she and her husband have attached conditions to the bequest.

“We plan to create a trust in Chunmun’s name for monkeys,” Ms. Brajesh says in the film. She does not say how much the trust fund will be worth.

The trust will use the money to feed monkeys that are forced to leave their natural habitats because of deforestation and wander into human settlements, Ms. Brajesh says in the film.

Chunmun has grown accustomed to being treated as one of the family. Although he eats fruit like his wild peers, the monkey’s favorite meals, according to his owners, are chow mein and chilli paneer, a spicy dish of Indian cottage cheese.

Ms. Brajesh says Chunmun likes to eat tasty food, but adds that he would never snatch food from anyone, or pick up crumbs from the floor and eat. “He eats like a human — picks up morsels from its plate,” she said in the footage.

The monkey lives in an air-conditioned cage and Ms. Brajesh says he prefers the air-conditioner to be switched on when it is hot. Similarly, during the cold winter months a hot-air blower is put to use in his enclosure.

Ms. Brajesh believes that Chunmun is the sole cause of all the prosperity in her and her husband’s life, she says in the video.
