What would fighter jets be able to do in that situation? Air India One is equipped with RWR, MAWS and ACM so would see the threat and potentially be able to evade it, if there were fighters escorting the plane what could they possibly do? You don't expect them to physically put themselves in the path of the SAM do you?

Fighter jets can target ground location. Don't forget the possibility of having more than one missile fired.
I hope Air India one have good counter measures. Would that match an advanced fighter? Anyway, better to have more platform for counter measures in hostile situation. I would expect fighter jets to take on the missiles in a hopeless situation. That is what protocol should be and training.

Can you imagine a situation that a missile being fired on Air India one in AF and PAK? Rogue elements can do that. That would bring countries to war. God forbid if something wrong happens, it would be Nuclear.

I think he might have been escorted by IAF jets (though only president gets that) but for security measures this must be done.

The BUK SAM is the most sophisticated medium-range SAM in the Russian arsenal. It was introduced at the same time as the S-300 series. The Russians have some of the best SAMs in the world so I would not take them lightly

Say the US was interested in attacking a target that was protected by BUK SAMs then they would not take this lightly. You are likely to get the whole strike package; EW aircraft like the EA-18G growler with its jamming systems and also strike aircraft with anti-radition missiles and PGBs, to knock out the BUK SAM system, before it becomes a threat to any aircraft that may be used to bomb the target from close range.

We also need to consider that there would be a certain element of surprise since the BUK system would not know when and where the strike package is likely to attack it.

Lastly, fighter aircraft are far more stealthy and much more manoeuvrable and so have a much better chance of avoiding any SAMs fired at them than a large commercial airliner.

So a "think-thank" thinks a large airliner with counter-measures has any chance of surviving an attack from a SAM like BUK? It looks like "think-thank" status is given to people based on knowledge about an area than actual analytical ability.
