BATHINDA – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday once again threatened to cut off Pakistan’s water supply.

Speaking at an inauguration ceremony, Modi who is dubbed a hard liner in India expressed that water belonging to India could not be allowed to enter Pakistan.

‘The fields of our farmers must have adequate water. Water that belongs to India cannot be allowed to go to Pakistan. Government will do everything to give enough water to our farmers’ said PM Modi.

“We formed a task force on Indus water treaty to ensure farmers of Punjab and other states get each drop of water due to them,” he added.

The premier expressed that he was concerned more about farmers than the arithmetic of elections.

Currently, Pakistan and India grab a share of their water under the 1960’s Indus Waters Treaty that remained effective even under hostile environment during wars of 1965 and 1971.

Under the treaty, which was signed by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and President Ayub Khan in Sept 1960, water of six rivers — Beas, Ravi, Sutlej, Indus, Chenab and Jhelum — are to be shared between the two countries.

However, Indian authorities threatened Pakistan of using water as weapon soon after the relations between the neighbours became frayed after the Uri attack that left 18 soldiers dead.

India blamed Pakistan for the attack but Pakistan categorically gainsaid the allegations in this regard.

The tension simmered once again after India claimed of carrying out a surgical strike inside Pakistan, which Pakistan termed a drama.

Both nuclear-armed neighbours also expelled high commission staffers of each other following the allegations of espionage.

Recently India targetted Passenger bus in Neelum valley that left nine passengers dead. Moreover, three Pakistani soldiers also lost their lives in the attack that irked Pakistan.

. . . .
Glacier Diversion from GB and AJK with the help of Chinese engineering is the only solution to this.
It will cause an eco disaster probably drying up entire Indian held Kashmir and Punjab...but its worth it..rather than dying from thirst...also scrapping IWT means India can no longer be trusted on international treaties...

. .
Stopping our water will be a act of war. We are waiting for the day when you do it actually. We will rain missiles on your dam and on your cities the day you dare to stop our water and remember it will be having nuclear warhead.
So we don't have any missiles?

It's according to treaty we will be using our share of water.. We don't want to provide it to enemy..
While MODi is at it by flooding Indian plains. How about actually working for farmer community in india which is killing itself

Chinese wouldn't let themselves involved.. Also how glacier diversion would thirst Punjab or Kashmir? Just want to know what Pakistan can do by itself?

.
And this is following the Usraeli president\s visit! he talked about agriculture!!
The same drama as Ethiopia wit Egypt and the Nile waters!? There Usrael was involved too through its Ethiopian Jews!?.
Guess they can't help it but stir trouble.. they will lose this bid the same as they've lost the Ethiopian one...

We do have plans which is being on hold because of India's strong protest, our Xinjiang needs Tibetan water.

What a shame that China holds so much water but our Xinjiang is still parched...Tibetan water is so close to Xinjiang

If its about utilisation of our share of water pakistan cant question it. India is in full right to use its water to the fullfill its basic need.

You do first and we follow suit, if you divert a river then all bets are off.

According to a report by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) the total inflow from China to India in the Indus river basin is estimated at 181.62 cubic kilometers. The mean annual inflow into Pakistan from India through the western tributaries, considering the Indus Water Treaty, amounts to 170.27 cubic km. Thus a water stoppage by China would be a net loss for India, even if it diverts water from Pakistan (which India largely lacks the infrastructure to do at this time).

it's really easy to boast on Facebook.. Let's do it. Whole India doesn't depend on a single river. All downstream countries will protest including human resource council will intervene & world wouldn't stand still watching this move. Also Pakistan will suffer both way.
