Pakistan hopes that the meeting between PM Nawaz Sharif and Modi will help defuse tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbours. Terming the scheduled meeting between the two leaders “a positive development”, Foreign Office spokesperson Qazi Khalilullah said the meeting was likely to have “a positive impact on the bilateral relations at regional and international levels”.

The Nawaz-Modi meeting came in the backdrop of tensions between the two neighbours that had emerged after a series of controversial statements issued by the Indian premier against Pakistan.

Modi had not only accused Pakistan of fuelling terrorism in India but also admitted that India had played a part in the break-up of Pakistan in 1971.

Politicians on both sides of the border exchanged a volley of accusations hither and thither after Modi issued the statements.

Earlier, before the meeting took place, Indian officials said they were looking at a ‘substantive’ dialogue with Islamabad with focus on terrorism and the release of Mumbai blasts alleged mastermind Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi. Pakistani sources said the focus would be on Kashmir, according to the Times of India.

Further, on Thursday night PM Nawaz met Modi at a dinner hosted by Russian President Vladimir Putin, a day ahead of their bilateral talks.

. . .
wow this is huge, what remains to be seen is whether the Pak army is ok with this, or maybe they gave the go ahead to Nawaz Sharif to begin with.

either way, good development

. . . . .
A tactful move by india in preserving it's equation with russia. Russia get to claim the credit for having a compelling rapo with India, India gets access to the nuke subs, China gets to play the shadow guarantor and pakistan gets to sell a story to it's masses.

A meeting in New Delhi will be held between two NSAs to discuss all issues connected to terrorism,” he added.
I'm assuming the NSA meet would be as important as that of the premiers.

Modi sure knows that he's on the hitlist of many terrorist organisations, and this visit to Pakistan would be a challenge to all such organisations.
May peace prevail!!!

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif hold bilateral talks in Russia

Ufa: Hour-long bilateral talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif today produced breakthrough announcements that included military-to-military contact between the two countries and Mr Modi's first-ever visit to Pakistan for a SAARC summit.

Here are 10 developments in the story:
  1. After talks that went on longer than expected, the Foreign Secretaries of the two countries held a joint briefing and announced a series of steps to improve ties that have been strained for months.
  2. The officials announced that top army officers from India and Pakistan will meet in person in a new mechanism to de-escalate tension along the border. A joint statement listed "early meetings between the chiefs of the Border Security Force and Pakistan Rangers."
  3. According to the statement, the National Security Advisers of the two countries will meet in New Delhi to "discuss all issues connected to terror."
  4. India and Pakistan have also decided to find ways of expediting the 26/11 Mumbai terror trial, said Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar, adding that additional evidence, including voice samples, will be sent to Pakistan.
  5. Pakistan says evidence submitted so far by India including that against 26/11 plotter Zaki-ur-Rahman Lakhvi is insufficient. Mr Lakhvi's release from jail in Pakistan in April outraged India and was raised today by PM Modi in his meeting with the Pakistani prime minister.
  6. PM Modi and Nawaz Sharif had met informally at a dinner hosted by Russian President Vladimir Putin last night.
  7. Just a day ahead of the talks, Pakistani forces violated ceasefire again at the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir in which a BSF jawan was killed.
  8. India called off a dialogue between foreign secretaries in August, incensed that Pakistan's envoy in New Delhi had engaged with Kashmiri separatists in the run-up to those talks.
  9. Today's meeting comes at a time when Pakistan has warned India against any military operations on its soil along the lines of the one in Myanmar last month in which Indian Special Forces went across the border and destroyed two militant camps, killing as many as 50 rebels.
  10. Mr Modi and Mr Sharif last met in Kathmandu in November, 2014, but did not have a proper bilateral meeting. Prime Minister Modi then reached out to Mr Sharif by wishing him at the beginning of the holy month of Ramzan.
