If there is no market for F-3, then it will end up like the F-2 program, an over expensive toy with limit capability. This is why I kept telling our Nihon friend that this program is about dick-measuring stick than real strategic depth. I also don't see our American friend too happy seeing another 5th gen to take their market share away. They already invest a lot in F-35 and the last thing they want is to have another buyer ditching their product.
If US still made diesel sub, Australia would not be buying from Japan. unlike US European allies, US still have very big influence over Japan, it would not be allowed to compete with US in arms sale, every country who could receive ATD-X is either already or will be forced into buying F-35.
