Mirpur University to award honorary doctorate to Geelani

The Mirpur University of Science & Technology (MUST) in Pakistan administered Kashmir (PaK) will confer the honorary degree of doctorate to Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman Syed Ali Geelani for his services to struggle for right of self determination and for being a great scholar and man of high intellect.
“The PaK President and Chancellor of MUST Sardar Muhammad Masood Khan will confer the honorary degree of doctorate upon senior most Hurriyat leader and chairman Tehreek-e-Hurriyat Syed Ali Geelani on the 2nd convocation of the Mirpur University on January 16,” Vice Chancellor of University, Dr Habib ur Rehman announced at a news conference, here today.
He said the varsity had extended invitation to Geelani to attend the function to receive the honorary degree of doctorate.
“But the elderly leader would not be in a position to attend the ceremony because of confiscation of his travel documents by India,” Rehman said.
He said senior Hurriyat leader and representative of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat in PaK, Ghulam Muhammad Safi will receive the degree on behalf of Geelani.
“Geelani through a letter has informed the varsity that he has nominated Ghulam Muhammad Safi to receive the degree on his behalf,” the VC said.
He said Geelani informed them that his travel documents including passport have been seized by India and he was not allowed to move out from India.
Geelani is under continuous house arrest at his Hyderpora residence in Srinagar from 2010.
The PaK president and Chancellor Mirpur University Masood Khan had accorded approval of conferring the honorary degree of doctorate to Geelani after the approval by Senate of the University in recognition of his life time contribution to Kashmiris struggle for right to self determination, being a great scholar and a man of high intellect.
