DHAKA: Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment said one crore more workers will get opportunity to go aboard in the next ten years.

Parliamentary Standing Committee on the ministry made the disclosure at the 22nd meeting held at Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Thursday.

Anisul Islam Mahmud, chairman of the committee, presided over the meeting attended, among others, by Expatriates` Welfare & Overseas Employment Minister Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain.

A total of 249, 456 workers have been sent to abroad till April in this year, meeting sources said adding Bangladesh earned a total of $4545.48m remittance from January to April last.

It will be possible to send 7.5 lakh workers in foreign countries in this year, sources said.

The committee presented a report in the meeting.

The ministry identified seven problems including searching the new labour market, setting up labour wing in embassies, monitoring the activities of the recruiting agencies, modernizing the immigration process, expanding the BMET services, proving loan through expatriate welfare bank and setting up technical training centre, says the report.

A total of five high-level government delegations have been formed to establish new labor market.

The new labor market includes Iraq, Romania, Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Russia, Canada, Sweden, Sudan, Greece, Republic of the Congo, Estonia, Liberia, Algeria, Azerbaijan, South Africa, Angola, Nigeria, Botswana, Sierra Leon and so many.

Of them, in the meantime, the process has been started to send workers in Sweden, Angola, South Africa, Iraq, Algeria, and Congo.

The meeting recommended expanding the activities of Expatriate Welfare Bank in the rural areas.

The meeting also recommended strengthening legal aid activities in foreign labour wing.

Expatriates` Welfare & Overseas Employment secretary Dr Zafar Ahmed Khan was present, among others.

Nearly 10 lacs a year??? I highly doubt that. But we can get close to 5 million by 10 years.

Many new markets are opening up. In the mean time middle east will require more labour. But this time Bangladesh should more concentrate to send skill labor. There is a huge demand of electrician, plumber, car mechanics, construction worker etc. In the developed world.
