Ministry of Defense to get $4.11 billion budget for 2020-21 FY

if i was BD commander i will request BD gov please take few billions back we dont want this much money :hitwall:
This budget is actually not enough to meet the current expenses given the expansion spree currently our armed forces are undergoing. This expansion is all encompassing. Currently army is recruiting a lot of man power. In the last 6 years, army went from 7 division to 10 division strong, navy and air force also recruiting more man power. Simultaneously a lot of military infrastructure development also happening. Construction of a number of cantonments, a 1.2 billion dollar Submarine base, a full fledged Naval base, two dedicated air force base, an aeronautical complex with aviation university, a riverine brigade and many more projects are ongoing. At the same time arms acquision also gaining momentum which is acknowledged in a recent SIPRI report. Bangladesh is currently 20th largest arms importer globally. Which is nothing to be proud of, still indicate our expanding footprint in the global arms market. So considering all of these factors, this budget is nothing. Currently we should have ideally at least 100 billion dollar national budget with 8-10 billion dedicated to defence force. But this is not the reality.

Lol. People need to understand to increase allocation for anything you need to increase tax revenues. Your tax collection is about 10% of your GDP. You cannot hope spend quarter of it on defence. Every one is talking as if Bangladesh is deliberately keeping down their defence budget, no it's just managing with what it got.

Touché.

Now replace 'BD' with 'India' and 'Jamati' with 'Hindutva Nutcase'.

Bangladesh has Jamatis under very tight control.

Same cannot be said of Hindutva crazies in India.

Jihadis often say this in their defense.

. . .
They spend 500-800 million of these in procurement and maintenance. AFAIK I’m yet to see a seperate procurement budget evidence as told by defense pages

Bangladesh's budgeting process is very dodgy. The government plays games to fool donor agencies. They channel funds from different sectors to spend on defence.

For example, pawning off defence credit repayments to the debt servicing budget, sourcing defence rations from food ministry allocations, etc..

The actual defence spending is much higher than what is declared.

While this may seem to be a positive thing but it opens up avenues for corruption and theft.
Best to be upfront and transparent.

why do you think BDR mutiny happened, they killed off all the people that wanted to stop corruption in BDR... especially smuggling business

Well, that was certainly part of it but the DG's corruption was also a major source of frustration.
The biggest reason for the mutiny was very difficult and unsanitary working conditions at the BOPs while officers lived in luxury and poor perks (including no opportunity to be deployed in UN missions to build up much needed life savings).

Many BOPs lacked proper food and sanitation facilities.

My understanding of the incident is that the original plan of the conspirators was to simply hold the officers hostage to realise demands from the govt but some hot heads ruined everything by killing the DG triggering a horrendous chain of events that followed.

I wonder, if we will ever fully uncover the reason behind the mutiny and the killings. It is still very much a mystery.

Perhaps after the 2023 election, when BAL aren't here anymore.

Yeah, I'm hoping the 2023 is a free and fair one...

Perhaps this is just me having an optimism bias, remains to be seen anyhow.

to be honest killing the DG was counterintuitive when he already planned the benefits of the jawans that was just carried out later after the restructuring...
there was a lot of incompetency at play too, like PM sending political members in a military situation, pulling back of army to let them escape, Chief of army promising rescue and staying inactive throughout it... if proper justice was to be served, both PM and Chief who blame each other now would have been put into trial...

i would rather have stability over "free and fair elections"

I'd be careful, if I were you. These things can have consequences.

Hasina will not run for the next election, she said it herself in an interview with German broadcaster Deutsche Welle (DW)

I think I will miss her, hopefully the next PM can fill the large personality void/vacuum thay she will leave behind.

Neither do I, but as long as you don't have permanent residence abroad or a second citizenship, you can expect her wrath.

most probably her son or daughter so meh....

Her daughter will not run, her son doesn't have the mettle; he can never win.

BAL are most probably going to nominate Obaidul Quader or Playboy FM Abdul 'Minoxidil' Momen.

BNP will most definitely nominate Mirza Fakhrul or If they ally with Gono Forum, they it will be Kamal Hossain.

Irrespective of their politics and policies, I would prefer either Kamal Hossain or Mirza Fakhrul.

Hell, Fakhrul should switch sides and run for BAL, he will for sure.
