Tens of millions of workers in India are on a day-long strike demanding higher wages and to protest against the government's economic reforms.

Banks, government offices and factories are shut, while public transport is also disrupted in parts of the country.

The government says the reforms are needed to bolster the economy.

But trade unions say the government has not addressed the demands of the workers in banking, telecommunication and manufacturing industries.

They also oppose a government directive to state-run pension funds to put more money into stock markets.

'Vile conspiracy'
Tapan Sen, general secretary of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions, told the BBC that more than 150 million workers in different industries were on strike.

But there has been no independent corroboration of the numbers given by the unions.

Mr Sen's union has accused the government of a "vile conspiracy... to privatise the public sector and invite foreign capital in some parts of industry".

Banks, shops and schools shut down in parts of the country, including in the southern Karnataka and Kerala states, where public transport was also disrupted, according to reports.

News channels showed flag-waving protesters squatting on railway tracks in the states of Orissa and West Bengal.

More than 20 protesters were arrested after they damaged two government buses in West Bengal, senior police official Anuj Sharma told AFP.

Ten major unions called the strike after talks with Finance Minister Arun Jaitley broke down, with leaders rejecting his offer to raise the minimum wage for unskilled workers, reports said.

"This strike is against the central government, this strike is for the cause of the working people," Ramen Pandey of the Indian National Trade Union Congress told the AFP news agency.

"Our strike will be 100% successful... we will prove that this strike is the world's largest ever."

Since taking charge in May 2014, PM Narendra Modi's BJP government has initiated economic reforms and is trying to ease labour laws to attract foreign investment and make it easier to do business in the country.

The government also plans to sell its stake in state-owned companies, which are incurring heavy loses.

India’s labour unions wielded their clout on Friday (Sept. 02) with 180 million workers going on strike demanding higher pay and in protest of the Narendra Modi government’s economic policies.

These workers belong to 10 of the country’s biggest trade unions, and include employees of banks, government telecom companies, and coal mining firms. But Indian railway workers, central government employees, and members of the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS)—a sister body of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party—are not participating in the one-day strike.

“Besides ports and civil aviation, essential services like transport, telecom, and banking will be paralysed,” SP Tiwari, secretary of the Trade Union Coordination Committee, a labour union, said on Sept. 01. “The workers will go on strike in hospitals and power plants but the protest will not affect their normal functioning.”

Last year, a similar strike cost the economy more than Rs25,000 crore ($4 billion).

The workers have presented a charter of 12 demands, which includes a monthly minimum wage of Rs18,000 and a pension of Rs3,000. They also want the government to stop disinvesting at various public sector units, change the foreign direct investment policy, and ensure universal social security for all workers.

The government has, meanwhile, promised to look into the protesters’ demands. “In the last one-and-a-half years, the inter-ministerial committee had met with central trade unions,” India’s finance minister Arun Jaitley said. “The government has taken some decisions with regard to those (demands) on the basis of their recommendations.”

The strike has paralysed public transport across some Indian cities. In some states, protesters have clashed with the police.

In Gurgaon, auto wallahs were on strike for past few days. And today, on the day of this "nationwide strike", autos are running as normal. These left parties are good at only one thing - do not let anyone do anything. And they want increasingly more salary for doing lesser work.

Only our "left" is not satisfied with modi. They are the ones who do not want to do anything nor will they allow anyone to bring any positive change! And incidently only left leaning states are affected- there was no affect of strike on the state I am in right now!

.
Kaamchor, corrupt or terrorists - are not satisfied, oppose and dread modi (in the same order).
asking for salary increase and reduce working hours is not terrorism sir

Sure they can... and then they shouldn't lament in a few years when they have nothing at all. The system of economics and human nature does not allow for unrealistic communism Imran Bhai. You are paid according to what is feasible.

.
the impact of strike is severe only in two states having communist influence
