As another member pointed out, American way of conflict is not simply about 'winning or loosing' - they have numerous objectives in mind which are fulfilled one at a time. A few do not work out but they not care.what planet are you living on?? The US has lost virtually any war that they had to grind out against an insurgency and population.
Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan.. when was the last time the US had a COIN success story?? perhaps the most humiliating one in Lebanon at the time of cowboy Reagan (tough man hero) where 250~ american troops 70~ french fries were slaughtered and both powers left immdiatly instead of seeking revenge or engaging on behalf of zionists...
everyone knows the american weakness by now.. you bleed and kill enough of their soldiers, they will tuck their tails between their legs and flee
They will unnecessarily prolong a conflict if they have to, to appease their Military Industrial Complex (good for business), and also for "political objectives." This WARRANT a STAY in a particular 'region of interest' for as long as feasible and justifiable.
They came to Afghanistan to eliminate Osama Bin Laden and his Al-Qaeda Network (primary objective). They accomplished this objective by 2011 but they had other things in mind while maintaining their presence in Afghanistan (Do you know that they actually ALLOWED Osama to slip into Pakistan from Tora Bora mountains in 2002 ??? This was admitted by John Kerry in 2009). To spy on neighboring countries, to utilize Afghanistan as a test-bed for new types of weapon systems from time-to-time, and to have a say in Afghan politics for as long as feasible.
THAT is what much of the world is coming to understand by now.
One WAR comes to an end; another is started after a short while; like CHAPTERS of a BOOK written in advance.
If they want to WIN a WAR, then this would be a different type of "military operation." This kind of WAR is not prolonged, and objectives are fleshed out for the needful. All that military might works well enough, when DESIRED.
