WASHINGTON (CNN) - The US military's retired military analyst, Rick Francona, said the northern region of Syria was a candidate for a major US-Turkish confrontation, wondering whether Washington would accept the possibility of the Turkish army's destruction of Kurdish forces it supported.
In an interview with CNN, Francona said in response to a question about his reading of the "olive branch" operation carried out by Turkey and the Free Syrian Army forces against the Kurdish Democratic Union: "This area of the Syrian north was not a good area for Daesh. So why is Turkey attacking it? There is one answer: the Kurds. "
"The Turks have serious concerns that the Kurds might establish a semi-autonomous region in Syria that is similar to that of the Kurds in Iraq, something the Turks are very afraid of." Francona said.
When asked about the possibility of the return of the forces in Syria, which cooperated in fighting Daesh, to fight each other after the defeat of the organization, Francona replied : "This is possible, because we lost the umbrella that was enough to keep everyone in this alliance, despite their hatred of it. And things are likely to worsen more because "We have the Russians who are watching closely and with concern. We have the American side. The question is, will the Kurdish military force be allowed to be destroyed by the Turkish army?"
He added: "The Turkish army is capable of defeating the Kurds in that region, it is is clearly superior in firepower, will we stay neutral watching this unfolds?, will the Russians allow the Turks to launch a military operation in the area adjacent to their area of operations in Syria?
And what about the Syrian side itself?
"We are facing a major confrontation between Turkey on the one hand and the United States on the other," Concluded the retired American officer who had previously worked as a military attaché to his country in Syria.

So what do you think about it guys? In light of the current visit by a US military delegation to Ankara and this: The Pentagon is threatening to cut off support for "protection units" if they move their forces east of the Euphrates to the city.
