Army to be modernised: Hasina

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday said her government is pledged-bound to ensure the country’s overall development and its people as well as modernising the armed forces.

The Prime Minister said this while addressing a function marking the 37th founding anniversary of the President Guard Regiment (PGR) at Dhaka Cantonment.

Hasina said implementation of the National Defense Policy and Forces Goal 2030 of Bangladesh Army is underway.

She mentioned that a strong, disciplined, well-educated and professional army equipped with modern technology is the symbol of national independence and sovereignty.

In this context, she said a permanent residence and an operational deployment have been established for a ‘brigade group’ at Ramu to protect the country’s eastern border.

The Prime Minister said her government always feels to build a modern armed force with research, training and adequate administrative equipment.

"The Awami League government always takes effective steps to develop the armed forces as it believes in development, expansion and modernisation of the army," she said.

Elaborating various steps of her government during the current tenure and its previous term for the development of the armed forces, the Prime Minister said her government during its previous term (1996 -2001) implemented massive programmes to this end.

The programmes include setting up of a number of units, brigades, and various institutions such as National Defense College, Military Institute of Science and Technology, Armed Forces Medical College and Bangladesh Institute of Peace support and training.

Hasina said, after assuming office this time, her government procured over 150 APCs for strengthening the army and established an AD regiment for the army.

She said Mig 29 has been procured for the Air Force and construction work of advance base in Cox's Bazar is progressing well

I do not believe BAF procured Fulcrums yet merely a decision, but IF They did it is a bad purchase. Fleet commonality must do away in case of BAF. Fulcrums are the past. Bangladeshi Air Force needs Next Gen Capable Highly Technological Aircrafts in its inventory such as SU-30/35. I have read Russians are willing to loan similar to American Foreign Military Sales that make BAF procure any platform with ease without stressing economy.

Why would BAF want second hand upgraded Mig-29 Fuclrums for $25M a piece when baseline SU-30 is $34M-$36M A capable variant is around $42M And SU-35 that is Yet to receive export orders baseline Variant is $45M. Must BAF sacrifice Capabilities...A Squadron of SU-35 would be a perfect deal.

She was referring to Mig29 procurement in 1999 as a success of her Govt. :-(

Thankyou for the information. I think SU-30 is selling like hot cakes everywhere BAF needs to look into that platform, secondly there would be no worries of any sanction, Chinese have their indigenous Flankers in case Russians impose sanctions in case of conflict on behest of hindustan. But you people would be out of luck if you procure cold war Fulcrums. Atleast 300 Fulcrums are in deplorable conditions in Russia that are ready to be sold [after upgrades] in a second hand price out of russian inventory.

Nice job to BD

Hope yoou guys enjoy the aircraft

Are you sure :undecided: ? Could be a reporting mistake.

However She said after "assuming office this time". And the things she mentioned(in the red highlighted part) were quite recent.

Looking at the purchases of the navy(mostly second hand stuff) there could be a huge chance that we might buy second hand upgraded planes as well(sadly)

Yeah, her statements are very similar to all previous statements given by her throughout last 3 years in military parades or programmes.... Its just reporting error here mixing her previous achievements and current achievements.... Anyway i am not sure, gut feeling!

It might as well be a slip of tongue , politicians they are.
Although there is a certain change in millitary press releases
this days . They have beome more "Expressive" maybe because
of a political shift. So if there was procurement it would have
been public by now.

Don’t forget that she is a wife of Zia-ul-Rehman an army officer who passed through the Pakistan Military Academy and her comments about her army, I can feel the positive effect of the military culture in her.
Thanks to Pakistan Military Academy & the Pak Army Culture

If we had a better govt, we would have gifted our brothers JFTs, like we gifted F-6s in the 80's. This would really freak India out, and also bolster our Bengali brother's defence. The aircraft is quiet above what others(Indians) make it out to be.

Mikhail Pogosyan, director of UAC(United Aircraft Corporation, the holding parent company of both Mikoyan and Sukhoi) also went public berating the Russian govt for supplying RD-93 engines for the JF-17, saying that engine supplies should be halted as this aircraft offered similar performance to a MiG-29, at a price Mikoyan couldn't compete at. So it's quiet good when even your competitors make it out to be as good. And their expert opinion carries MUCH more weight than what any indo forum keyboard warrior might say.

Also, if you follow the Russian avionics industry, the Chinese seem to have exceeded that, and that's something even Russians admit. Here's an excerpt from StrategyCenter, a Virginia based think-tank that interviewed Russian experts visiting China's Defence Electronics exhibit(CIDEX):
Today the former students (the Chinese) have become the masters. Chinese industry now has the ability to produce components that the Russian electronics industry (after almost two decades of no investment by their government) is no longer capable of either designing or manufacturing. The initial failure rates on the production of transmit/receive (T/R) modules for the Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radars being designed for the Mikoyan MiG-35 and the Sukhoi T-50/PAK-FA 5th-generation fighter, for example, were so high that it would have bankrupted any western firm involved in a similar programme.

Not surprisingly, this year’s CIDEX show saw groups of Russian specialists going through the halls and looking for components that they could source out of China to be utilised in Russian-designed weapon systems. Russian specialists will point out that they are now at a huge disadvantage to the Chinese in two very significant respects.

One is that the commitment by the central government in resources to the defence electronics sector is both sustained and serious. “They can take a field where there is nothing but flat land and wild grass,” said one Russian company representative, “and the next thing you know there is a full-blown factory or design centre there turning out a world-class product.”
Report from the 2010 Chinese Defense Electronics Exhibition (CIDEX): Growing Industry – Advancing Technology

It really seems that the future is with China, not Russia. Their severe problems with AESA radars and the high failure-rate, showcases this.

Perhaps JFTs would be a wishful daydream though. If not Thunders, I wish the BAF gets J-10Bs in the future.

I hope you are quoting some old rate. Is it still available at the price you quoted here????

Its true, Pakistan Military Academy had an important role in our post-71 Bangladesh...... Those freedom fighters who passed from that academy never took india as friend, were critical about india always... One portion of them eliminited whole family of Mujib and another portion formed BNP the most popular party of Bangladesh! Pro-india freedom fighters mostly awami leaders and student workers were part of Mujib Bahini ( a parallel militia force with mukti Bahini).....Mujib Bahini - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.....after 71 this Mujib bahini tried to turn Bangladesh into a satellite state of India, but patriot muktis saved the country!! Now its a balanced one!

AESA radar is still underdevelopment in Russia. Similarly happening in Europe with their EFT and Rafale.

We won't be able to get our hands on the FC-20 for quite some time.
