Almost Mass transit systems are heavily subsidized and run in loss ( except probably Delhi Metro ). No matter how loss it incurs, a mass transport system is a must for any modern city.

Trust me, little googling can do wonders.

"The Mass Transit Railway (MTR) Corporation, which manages the subway and bus systems on Hong Kong Island and, since 2006, in the northern part of Kowloon, is considered the gold standard for transit management worldwide. In 2012, the MTR produced revenue of 36 billion Hong Kong Dollars (about U.S $5 billion)—turning a profit of $2 billion in the process".

The Unique Genius of Hong Kong's Public Transportation System - The Atlantic

Syed sahib first and most important thing to remember is you cannot cannot compare apples and oranges. I am posting from your link below.please you and others feel free to tell me,why the same company operating mass transit through out the world is only turning profits in Hong Kong.

Governemnt subsidize in Hong Kong is given direct to the people, making the profits looks artificially bigger then they are. Visit Hong Kong you have pretty much No choice but to take the bus or train. Or pay through the nose for private transport.

Like no other system in the world, the MTR understands the monetary value of urban density—in other words, what economists call "agglomeration.” Hong Kong is one of the world’s densest cities, and businesses depend on the metro to ferry customers from one side of the territory to another. As a result, the MTR strikes a bargain with shop owners: In exchange for transporting customers, the transit agency receives a cut of the mall’s profit, signs a co-ownership agreement, or accepts a percentage of property development fees. In many cases, the MTR owns the entire mall itself. The Hong Kong metro essentially functions as part of a vertically integrated business that, through a "rail plus property" model, controls both the means of transit and the places passengers visit upon departure. Two of the tallest skyscrapers in Hong Kong are MTR properties, as are many of the offices, malls, and residences next to every transit station (some of which even have direct underground connections to the train). Not to mention, all of the retail within subway stations, which themselves double as large shopping complexes, is leased from MTR.

The profits from these real estate ventures, as well as that 85 percent farebox surplus, subsidize transit development: proceeds pay for capital expansion as well as upgrades. The MTR’s financial largesse means that the transit system requires less maintenance and service interruptions, which in turn reduces operating costs, streamlines capital investments, and encourages more people to use transit to get around. And more customers means more money, even if fares are relatively cheap: most commutes fall between HK $4 and HK$20 (about 50 cents to $3), depending on distance. (In London, by comparison, a Tube journey can cost as much as $18). Fare increases in Hong Kong are limited by regulations linking fares to inflation and profits, and the territory’s government recently started giving a HK $600-per-month travel stipend to low-income households, defined as those earning less than HK $10,000 a month.

This model of transit management works partly because Hong Kong is a closed system: There are no suburbs from which people can commute by car, so there are strong incentives for everyone within the territory to use the system. This feature, combined with other regulations, has kept car ownership low: 6 of every 100 vehicles in Hong Kong are for personal use, whereas the number in the U.S. is closer to 70. And while the NYC subway was built over a century ago and was neglected during much of the 20th century’s suburban sprawl, Hong Kong’s metro was only developed in the late 1970s. As a result, it doesn’t have to rely on signals technologies from the 1930s that are only slowly being upgraded (hence the track closures in New York).

I think the whole buzz about the Delhi Metro being profit making is a farce, or, at the very least spinning the facts. Operationally the Delhi Metro may make a profit (revenues exceed the cost to run the services) but there's no way the Delhi Metro makes enough to cover the HUGE (simply vast) cost to construct the system (which is still expanding on a massive scale). Consider the Phase 3 expansion that is currently underway will cost in excess of $8 BILLION USD to construct and this is just one phase, there are 2-3 more equally ambitious expansions planned immediately after the completion of Phase III.

It will take a long, long time for the Delhi Metro to actually become a profit making entity.

.
No Sir.
Delhi Metro makes an operational profit each year.

It will take a while for stats of Bangalore, Gurgaon, Jaipur, Bombay and Chennai to come out.

Delhi metro is not just bus service it also includes trains and subways.

Delhi Metro is not a bus service at all Sir.
It is only a Metro, that is only Metro train - it is both underground and overground.

Mass Trasit Systems globally are classified as Metros, BRTs, Monorals among others.

The BRT(Bus Rapid Transit - like Lahore Metro Bus) in Delhi is separate and is called Delhi BRT, not a Metro.

No Sir, there are probably about 4 or 5 metro systems in the world which post an Operational profit. Delhi Metro is one of them.

Yes Sir.
Which is why when we talk of Mass Transit Systems like Metro or BRT or Monorail the global keyword used is Operational Profit.
It is an accurate term which includes the cost of running the system and the repairs. Essentially everything after construction of the system.

Delhi Metro makes an Operational Profit - which in itself few systems have achieved.

Only 3% of Lahore People use Metro bus service which covers only 27 Km .
What were you expecting from a 27km line, that it would cover 50% of Lahores traffic? One line alone isnt useful at all, you need to connect it to other systems and lines such as metro for exsample, and connect it to normal busses that can bring passangers.

Istanbul Metrobus with its 50km and all the Metro, tramway, marmaray connections also only covers 12% of people.

.
Will 3% of Lahore mean around 300K people that's not bad

. . .
Metro Bus Project is giving a loss of yearly 1.65 Arab rupee . Only 3% of Lahore People use Metro bus service which covers only 27 Km . Metro Bus service is also fail to achieve the target to lessen the traffic on roads . Now PMLN is just using Metro for the sake of publicity

A PTI er quoting references from Geo News! kamal ha, Metha metha hup hup karwa karwa tho tho

.
Estimated population of Lahore is round about 10 million and 3% means 300,000 peoples, which proves that it is a successful project but yeh potian bastards yeh chahtay hen k sara lahore sara din Metro me betha rahey:hitwall:. Stupidity ke bhi koi limit hoti hai.
@ImranKhan kuch ap he samjhaien in ko.
