'Members' surprised by Saudi anti-terror coalition plan - BBC News

A number of countries have expressed surprise that they were included by Saudi Arabia in a new military alliance to fight terrorism.

Officials in Pakistan, Malaysia and Indonesia all said they had not formally agreed to join the alliance.

Saudi Arabia on Tuesday said 34 mainly Muslim nations would be part of the counter-terrorism grouping.

Prince Mohammed said it would focus on efforts to fight terrorism in Iraq, Syria, Libya, Egypt and Afghanistan.

"Currently, every Muslim country is fighting terrorism individually... so co-ordinating efforts is very important," he told a news conference.

He indicated there were still "procedures" for these countries to go through before joining, "but out of keenness to achieve this coalition as soon as possible, [the alliance of] 34 countries has been announced".

'Awaiting further details'
Pakistan's Foreign Secretary Aizaz Chaudhry was quoted in the Dawn newspaper as saying he was surprised by the announcement and had asked the Pakistani ambassador in Riyadh for clarification.

The country's foreign office said in a statement later on Wednesday that it was "awaiting further details to decide the extent of its participation in different activities of the alliance" before making a decision on whether to join.

In Indonesia, the foreign ministry said it too had not yet decided whether to join.

"The government is still observing and waiting to see the modalities of the military coalition formed by Saudi Arabia," foreign ministry spokesman Arrmanatha Nasir told The Jakarta Post.

Malaysian Defence Minister Hishammuddin Hussein went further - expressing support for the coalition but ruling out any military involvement from Kuala Lumpur.

"The Saudi initiative does not involve any military commitment, but an understanding that we will combat militancy," he said.

Announcing the alliance, Saudi Arabia said a joint operations centre would be established in the capital Riyadh and the coalition would focus on terror groups "whatever their doctrine".

It comes amid international pressure for Gulf Arab states to do more in the fight against so-called Islamic State.

The BBC's Frank Gardner points out that the Shia-majority nations of Iran, Iraq and Syria are noticeably absent from the alliance.

It is far from clear how it could conduct counter-terrorism operations in IS-plagued Iraq and Syria without the agreement of those governments, he adds.

Saudi Arabia's list of 34 alliance members: Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Benin, Chad, Comoros, Djibouti, Egypt, Gabon, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Malaysia, Maldives, Mali, Morocco, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Palestinians, Qatar, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sudan, Togo, Tunisia, Turkey, United Arab Emirates and Yemen.

Let's see how long it will take them to define a terrorist group. Egypt considers Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist group, but Turkey and Qatar don't. Saudi will consider Houthis a terrorist group but Benin and Ivory Coast probably haven't even heard of them. Someone will want to put Hezbollah on there but they are now a legitimate political party in Lebanon who is part of the coalition. Then you have Libya, which depends on which government is considered legitimate to know that the other side is the terrorist guys. Hamas designation as terrorist will depend on the day of the week, but Palestine is in the group too so no idea who will choose.

While all this conversation will be going on, Chad, Gabon, and Maldives will look at each other and wonder between themselves that what exactly are they supposed to contribute?

This is seriously the funniest news I have heard this month.

This is just a paper alliance. It is not like if there is a real war, the Saudi military would be sending its air craft carriers and Enterprise Space Ship to help the nation under attack. For example if there is a war between India and Pakistan or between Lebanon and Israel, you can be sure that Saudis will never allow their Enterprise Space Ship to get involved.

This said, one has to be fair. Alot of these countries need money urgently to develop themselves, so if each one of these can milk Saudis and Emiratis a low amount of tens of billions, then they should and let Saudis use their nation's name in Saudi advertisement pamphlets and TV broadcasts as part of this sand alliance. The total bill would come to few hundred billion dollars which Saudis can fully afford to pay, upfront cash.

Egypt yesterday already got its billions in cash and more billions in free oil for the next 5 years without contributing a single soldier. Other countries can do the same by milking the cash cow and completely leave the udder dry. When the Saudi udder runs dry, automatically it will help to reduce terror around the world since this is the udder which has been feeding terror around the world, from California to Paris to Peshawar to Damascus. So if each participant charges Saudis tens of billions of dollars in cash, for doing nothing, then this can indeed indirectly help with the mission of this paper alliance.

Oh how much I want them to do better against you guys(sectarian affiliation and stuff) but seriously they don't stand a chance. This is just another ploy by them to get some attention and divert the local attention away from their disastrous campaign in Yemen.

Shia-majority nations of Iran, Iraq and Syria
When did Syria became a Shia-majority nation, Assad's ethnic cleansing was not that effective.

Abd we don't even know what is alliance and for what??

.
famous Egyptian journalist 'Hasanein Heikal' has mocked them with a nice sarcasm:
Israel is close!

This coalition of 34 nations became a joke before it even started... Could have said potential members of the coalition or could have mentioned names of a bunch of nations to claim that these nations will find it easier to enter the alliance ( those with strong military or great cash) ..

Anyway I say let them use the name and milk them for cash. This is NATO where the powers fan actually force a nation to send its troops. If there is anything big then don't send the troops...

Could help in paying some of our bills. :p

Iranian members all asking each other and responding each other, thanking each other and stuff here, I understand but you worry too much :D
