elsewhere mostly dead prophets, in India.. living ones... its a legit career path
It was a career path for them when they were alive. And their lives still provides a career path for millions of priests/imams/mullahs/rabbis etc in those places.

BTW, I'm not sure if the word 'prophet' is suitable for this fellow. If it is, then there are plenty of such 'prophets' around today too, outside India. I was myself pressured to join a certain Christian group with weird beliefs and a prophet a few years back, in the USA. Won't mention specifics, but they have a church in India as well. They originate from a certain east Asian country. They believe that the end of the world is imminent, and exactly 140,000 people will gain admission to heaven and live life everlasting. The first step to join this elite group of 140,000 is of course, joining their church. In fact that's the only step. So by this definition of "prophet", there are plenty of them around even today.

The most famous failed prophecy of the end of the world was the "Great disappointment", which I have linked about in a post above. The events leading up to and following the supposed day lent some deep insight into human frailty and mass psychology and the "true believer syndrome". It's worth reading about.

The Holy Spirit.

The parents should be sent back to school. Real secular schools.
Unfortunately, our "real schools" don't teach people hot to think, only what to think. Critical thinking is completely neglected. I can assure you, that I (or a conman with better talent) can convince even alumni of "real schools" about such things. Not every single person, but a surprising number are prone to "magical thinking". That's what happens when students are taught what to know, but not how to know what to know.

people have more personal faith in their own baba/prophet than any mullah/priest. They are much more charismatic and potentially dangerous. With existing dogma(even mental ones like mormonism) you still dont go complete nuts, and release poisonous gas. With living baba, it always possible.

I knew few hindus who believe you need a baba (well they call him guru) to guide you morally in this world. Its not that common, but the level of commitment is incredible.
Even the leaders of breakaway christian mini faiths you are talking about are sort of prophets in my opinion. I am just trying to separate managers from enterprenures.
