Megastructures: seven wonders of the modern world near completion | Art and design | The Guardian

From Britain to the Middle East and China, engineers and architects are pushing the boundaries of possibility as they strive to create the biggest and the best

Chernobyl reactor, Ukraine
The engineers of the USSR who fought to bring the Chernobyl disaster under control built a hastily constructed concrete sarcophagus, designed to cover the hole that had opened up above the destroyed reactor. A new steel arched structure is being built, to be rolled on rails over the reactor, from which point demolition work can begin using cranes suspended from the new roof. It’s the most insanely difficult project, right down to the shift practices of the workers – if your personal radioactivity meter hits a certain level it’s tools down and you’re off site.

Crossrail, London
Many underground railways have been built before, but the logistical manoeuvring that has been necessary to keep a city of millions running above while this new east-west link is threaded through the sewers, cables, and foundations of London – not to mention existing underground tunnels – is truly staggering. Crossrail is strange for the UK, in that much of the infrastructure of the country is old, and there’s not a great deal of opportunity for expansion. But elsewhere in the world, there are projects on site that set new records for size.

FFR Grand Stade, Paris
For real mass sporting experience, there’s nothing like a stadium. A building that sits empty 90% of the time, then hosts huge crowds, is an extremely difficult task, one that the architects of Populous are wrestling with as they deliver a stadium for the French Rugby Federation that will accommodate 82,000 fans and boast a retractable pitch. It’s one of a generation of stadiums that are moving towards a more stately, civic appearance. Underneath the skin, there is still a mammoth retractable roof apparatus, capable of turning the stadium into one giant interior.

Yes the Beijing Daxing Airport will become the largest mega-structure. Located in the south, target to be completed by October 2018, it will be the 2nd airport for a busy Beijing, in addition to the existing Beijing Shoudu Airport in the north. It's designed to handle 800,000 flights and 120 million passengers per year, with 9 runways, and passenger terminal of 1.4 million sq.mt in size.

Actually a lot of existing airports are mega-structures, see Beijing Shoudu Airport T3:

As well as Shanghai Pudong, Guangzhou Baiyun, Shenzhen Baoan, and others:

Another airport that definitely qualified to be a mega-structure is Hong Kong Chek Lap Kok Airport. Built by China Communications Construction Company Limited (CCCC; they are also building the Colombo Port City), including the 3,080-acre artificial island that the airport is built on. The project is the most expensive airport project ever, according to Guinness World Records, and was voted as one of the Top 10 Construction Achievements of the 20th Century at the ConExpo conference in 1999.

Other mega-structures in my opinion include Beijing State Theater:

And of course the massive China Olympics Stadium seen in 2008:

Chengdu has the largest building in the world by sheer size. Most impressively, the building has an artificial sun that shines 24 hours a day. The New Century Global Centre is large enough to contain three Pentagons or 20 Sydney Opera Houses!

Fascinating stuff

Aren't they my friend! Since the OP is about megastructures, or "Wonders of the Modern World", so I post some from China along that theme. Well there are a lot of man-made megastructures in say infrastructures, civic buildings, military bases or industrial/energy complexes, welcome to post anything interesting from Pakistan!

Beautiful Infrastructure. Congrats to China.
Hopefully we will also build such amazing jaw dropping architecture in future.

Amazing.

Chinese developmental progress is amazing. I would love to visit China one day as a tourist.

Most welcome! There are a lot of megastructures for tourist as well, say Chimelong Ocean Kingdom which sets 5 Guinness World Records:
  1. World’s largest combined tanks of 12.87 million gallons of water
  2. World’s largest aquarium window
  3. World’s largest aquarium tank
  4. World’s largest acrylic panel
  5. World’s largest underwater viewing dome.
