Maruti Gypsy to be phased out as Indian Army books 3,200 Tata Safari Storme SUVs

TATA is actually making a tailor made light defence vehicle, which seems to have reasonably protection.

This SUV is still built in India? While you have very advance auto industry having several advance SUVs built in India, and Suzuki have not introduced Jimmy there?

Suzuki is milking both India & Pakistan, although I don't like Jimmy SUV specially due to its huge price but its available in Pakistan since few years and Suzuki Potohar (Gypsy in India) is discontinued since long.
its not in open market. the only buyer is armed forces.

Suzuki will replace most of the models soon in India as safety rating is going to be the norm.

All tin cans will get replaced.

Why so late,? India have good auto industry.

The only reason this was still in production was because of the Army. Now that the army no longer wants it, it will go out of production.

Why army keep buying it when local industry can offer much better solutions?

its not in open market. the only buyer is armed forces.

But you army have plenty good local built SUV options since long, why keep buying those old tech tin cans?

Much of popular Indian SUVs are diesel in 4WD. Tata Safari Storm afaik is in upward of INR 12L and weighs close to 2500kg. Not to mention all electronics in current gen SUVs which make repair in remote areas difficult.

Gypsy is 1000 kg and in INR6L range with easily repairable petrol engine. Practicality is one of main reason for long stay of Gypsy.

one factor is cost. it cost half of the other popular SUVs another is lazy inertia. things are changing for goods.

Cost??? That is a big surprise, because Indians members here cry cost issues about Pakistan and say India can afford any thing.

Environmental considerations. I don't think army will be able to procure BS4 engine after 2020 since BS6/ Euro6 will apply. Maruti Suzuki not willing to spend on R&D for new engine.

Cost is in accordance with effectiveness and contribution of system in overall defense preparedness. Transport vehicles doesn't essentially add teeth to defense forces, its a necessity. Armed forces wouldn't be more deadly if they arrive by Pardo or Lexus with same gear.

Norms have been laid out probably 5 years back...
Slowly they are phasing out older model , so the industry don't suffer.

I believe those Tata safari are not for front lines.
