Mumbai: The row over Marathi signboards in the maximum city turned ugly in Vikroli after hawkers thrashed MNS activists late Sunday night. Three MNS workers were grievously injured, while one of them suffered a skull fracture.

The prime suspect in the incident is local Congress leader, Abdul Ansari. Hawkers claim that MNS workers vandalised their stalls, while the Congress are saying that MNS is receiving what it sowed.

Abdul Ansari owns 600 hand carts in the area. His men attacked us with knives and swords. Our activists had gone to the area to distribute pamphlets for putting up Marathi signboards on shops," Sachin More, MNS spokesperson, told CNN-News18.

Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam, who is known to spearhead the North Indian hawkers' protest, tweeted in support of the act.

"We are against any kind of violence but there will be retaliation if the hawkers are attacked. For how long can MNS goons take law in their hands and get away with it? They will face the brunt of it at some point," he said.

Meanwhile, Mumbai Police have registered an FIR against 15-20 hawkers. They have been booked under sections 141, 143, 147, 149, 324, 326 of IPC. No arrests have been made so far.

Since this is related to my place, I would say, MNS is bad but illegal Hawkers at every corner & streets of crowded places in Mumbai are worst for society...I dont understand who give them the courage to set up their stalls at public places and claim that place as their belonging, they are not even Marathi people.... its strange but politics & corruptions is keeping them afloat..people like Nirupam, what to say...!!

Had they been Marathi would it have been OK?

Marathis would not indulge in illegal hawking so your question is a moot point.

Jobless Hindi Biharis are all over ..in Chennai they hog the streets, beach illegally vending their pani puris

Mangaluru MCC officials raid illegal Bihari pani puri stalls in different parts of the city

You know what's going to happen now.

Tathastu.

Cheers, Doc

Yes. It's their soil. They've bled and died on and for it for millennia.

Don't need rest of India pansy lectures here.

You do realise I am a Bihari who has made my life in Maharashtra right?

There is a problem with UP guys. Not so much Biharis, though the bloodlines do flow quite close.

Nothing some whacking cannot cure.

wait so now you realize that Mumbai needs city planning? laughable.
Mumbai is a case study on how not to let uncontrolled urbanization destroy a city. Cities in India are a mess and only pointing at illegal hawkers is myopic. Most of your shop-owners are marwadis who get along fine everywhere else in the country save for your maximum mess city, not hard to isolate the issue afaik.

An example of how historical upheaval is used as an excuse to justify current misgivings. The people making all the noise have at most fought malaria and dysentery during their lifetimes.
What India needs is centralized control in terms of planning urbanization and city development, kind of like what China does. We need entry barriers at least to protect exhausted cities like Mumbai.

What India needs is a bhayya vaccine.
