Is this confirmed? What's the source of this information?

If true, does India now wish to send a lander to the moon instead of sending a man in space? It would only imply India is reacting to Chinese lunar achievements.

I was quite looking forward to Indian manned mission.

Matching China dollar to dollar is neither practical nor possible, besides putting a rover on the moon will make more sense than putting a man in space.During this time the technologies which are important for Manned spaced flight is being perfected by ISRO

Rakesh Sharma has already made it to space. I think sending a Second Indian to space is not worth the cash spent. Human spaceflight has commercial implications- but is best left to private sector.

Rakesh Sharma went to lower earth orbit in a Soviet capsule, there's nothing for an average Indian Guptaji to be proud of. What India need is a tried and tested platform to deliver crews and payload to lower earth orbit and beyond without any foreign assistance. I don't count the personal achievement of Rakesh Sharma has anything to do with that of the State of India.

By that logic, every millionaire space tourist will make their respective countries proud.

So was I but it seems like the government is not releasing funds for manned space mission right now. Manned space mission has not been cancelled but has been put on hold. Already India faces a lot of flak for a satellite mission to Mars. Only God knows what kind of international criticism India will face for a manned space mission.

Sharma was a Indian citizen and the first Indian in Space. Apart from propaganda achievement of sending first Indian in space, I don't see much value to this mission. There are so many other pressing needs. I wish countries would pool resources, instead of wasting money re-inventing the wheel.

Got to say, I have to agree.

Better for ISRO to put its money in robotic missions and investment in research and production of heavy launchers than a manned mission.

That's one essential area where we are lacking. Our latest GSLV puts up a maximum of 4 tons...whereas other countries like US, Russia and ESA, China can easily put over 15 tons.

And any decent sized communication sat now weights over 6 tons.

The Real Target for the Baniyas will be to match SpaceX. With Modi in the driving seat, No wonder Money Earning will be a higher priority than "Prestige" Missions.

This is Much Much better for a nation like India, Where more reserach gets ( and is needed ) devoted to Thorium than Nukes.

We have seen how the ISRO can deliver. They can Deliver the Manned mission too, But why waste tehir Focus / Energy ? Apart from a antional pride what else do we achieve from a Manned Mission ?

OTOH, Gettiing :

- TSTO
- SSTO
- ULV

Is a far far more complex and real target for ISRO. We save Money that gies to Arinae, We Earn Money We Generate More Jobs. Thats what matters to a Common Indian.
