PARIS

Two French soldiers were killed on Wednesday after their armored vehicle was targeted by an explosive device in Mali, according to an Elysee statement.

"It is with great emotion that the president of the Republic learned of the death in operation of two soldiers of the 1st Spahis Regiment of Valencia, killed this morning in Mali in an attack by an improvised explosive device targeting their armored vehicle," read the statement.

Since August 2014, the French force Operation Barkhane, has nearly 4,000 troops deployed in five West African countries: Burkina Faso, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, and Chad.

It helps in the fight against militant groups in the Sahel region, especially in Mali.

. . . . . .
And we're waiting for the VBMR-L !

Now, I'm partial to the VLRA myself
and it ain't protected much. ;)

Hey, CRABs for everybody but the
lourds / heavies, that's an idea ...
except that the budget would need 3%.

"Et ils boiront le champagne qui fuse
à la santé de leurs morts."

Bonne nuit les gars, Tay.

Was this a UN deployment or regular NATO deployment?

Was this a UN deployment or regular NATO deployment?

Technically neither! Haven't you been following?
France went to Mali on a defense agreement with
its ex-colony Mali. The UN approval was there but
not the UN mission which takes much more time
to set up.
Name : MINUSMA.

There is no NATO whatsoever in play as France did
not use Article 5 but instead inaugurated article 47.2
of the EU after the 2015 attacks for which a strong
response was provided in help of Barkhane, not Serval.
The EU had reacted fast to the original crisis ... on
paper creating a force within a month of France's
actions but taking a month longer to deploy. It is
mostly a train and advice mission ( with an internal
security component added ).
Name : EUTM / ( EUCAP ).

There is also the AFISMA, a great ECOWAS initiative
that came in where an AU mission did not or prior.

Serval and Barkhane although helped by allies such
as the US and UK aside the EU 47.2 answers were
French operations.

Have a good day, Tay.
