In March, Hugo Barra, the popular face of Xiaomi in India had revealed that the company plans to start production in India in the next 18 months. Today, early this morning, he tweeted an image of a hoarding in Vizag promoting Mi and its plans to ‘Make in India’.

In the tweet, Barra says that Xiaomi is ready to take a giant leap in India. It could quite likely be about Xiaomi’s ‘Make in India’ plans and an announcement may be in the pipeline. On the other hand, the ‘giant leap’ could also mean the company’s plans for pan-India stores and further expansion of its reach across the nation.
The company recently announced its partnership with Redington to make its smartphones available across physical retail stores. “We have partnered Redington. We will begin with select cities like Hyderabad, Chennai and Bangalore and later scale it pan-India,” Xiaomi India Head Manu Jain had told PTI.
The company will be selling four models – Redmi 2, Mi 4, Mi 4i and Mi Pad – starting later this month. In April this year, Xiaomi had roped in Amazon and Snapdeal as its online partners and extended sales through its own website as well. The company has also ventured into brick and mortar stores by partnering with retail chain The Mobile Store and private telecom operator Bharti Airtel to reach out to more consumers.

"Sony, Foxconn and many more. Budget booster in indirect taxes silently working for domestic manufacturing," Revenue Secretary Shaktikanta Das said.
NEW DELHI: Enthused by the announcements of global electronics major Foxconn and Sony to set up manufacturing facilities in India, Finance Ministry today said the "budget boosters" are silently working and 'Make in India' is taking shape.

"Sony, Foxconn and many more. Budget booster in indirect taxes silently working for domestic manufacturing. Make in India taking shape," Revenue SecretaryShaktikanta Das said in a tweet.

Taiwan-based Foxconn, which makes iPhone, iPad and other Apple products, had earlier this week said it was in talks with Adani group and other Indian firms to set up manufacturing factories in India.

Foxconn Chairman and CEO Terry Gou, this week made a second visit to India in 45 days, said his company was "very keen to invest" in the country and is in talks to strike partnership with local companies.

Gou said Foxconn is in talks with billionaire Gautam Adani's Group for electronics manufacturing facilities and has visited Karnataka, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat to scout for possible locations for the facilities.

The Taiwanese firm is also working with Micromax and Snapdeal.

In June, Japanese electronics major Sony had said it was "seriously" looking at participating in the government's 'Make in India' initiative and may consider setting up a manufacturing plant in the country.

Sony India is the fourth highest contributor in the global sales of Sony Corporation.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in his 2015-16 Budget has announced a host of tax and non-tax initiatives to boost domestic manufacturing as part of the Make In India programme.

5 Things That Show Modi’s ‘Make in India’ Campaign Is Working

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched his ambitious “Make in India” program last September, pledging to lower barriers to doing business and promote foreign investment. He is hoping to transform Asia’s third-largest economy into a manufacturing powerhouse like China.

It has been almost a year since the program was launched, so it’s fair to ask if it has yielded any results.

While many international executives and investors have complained Mr. Modi and his party have not used their rare majority in Parliament to ram through some much-needed reforms, that hasn’t stopped them from making big new bets on India as other emerging markets have fallen out of favor. Here are five things that show Mr. Modi’s campaign is gaining traction.

    FDI is surging

Foreign direct investment between October and May was up 40% to $23.7 billion from the same period a year earlier. Net investments by foreign institutional investors, or the money coming through financial markets, totaled $40.92 billion in the fiscal year ended March 31, roughly seven times as much as in the prior year.

  • Industrial production is warming
The pick-up in investments is starting to show in the country’s industrial production numbers. Official data show India’s industrial production rose an average 2.7% year-over-year in the seven month period from October to May. Nothing spectacular one may say. But it is a significant step up from the measly 0.6% increase during the comparable period a year earlier.

  • Foxconn bet billions
Contract-manufacturing giant Foxconn last weekend announced plans to spend $5 billion on factories and research and development in the western Indian state of Maharashtra. The company is one of the many looking to produce in India as the country’s consumers spend more on electronics.
