Majority of Europeans say China will overtake 'broken' US within decade
Survey finds more Europeans than not say US cannot be trusted after four years of Trump

A majority of Europeans believe America’s political system is broken, that China will be the world’s leading power within a decade, and that Joe Biden will be unable to halt his country’s decline on the world stage, according to a report.

While many welcomed Biden’s victory in November’s US election, more Europeans than not feel that after four years of Donald Trump the US cannot be trusted, according to the study by the European Council on Foreign Relations.

“Europeans like Biden, but they don’t think America will come back as a global leader,” said the thinktank’s director, Mark Leonard. “When George W Bush was president, they were divided about how America should use its power. With Biden entering the White House, they are divided about whether America has power at all.”

The survey of 15,000 people in 11 European countries, conducted at the end of last year, found that the shift in European sentiment towards the US in the wake of the Trump presidency had led to a corresponding unwillingness to support Washington in potential international disputes.

At least half of respondents in all 11 countries surveyed felt, for example, that their government should remain neutral in any conflict between the US and China, while no more than 40% in any country said they would back Washington against Russia.

“It’s clear that the tumultuous Trump presidency has left an indelible imprint on Europe’s attitude towards the US,” said Ivan Krastev, chair of the Centre for Liberal Strategies, an NGO in Sofia, and an ECFR board member. “The majority of Europeans are now sceptical about the capacity of the US to shape the world. It makes many, rightly or wrongly, want to opt for a more independent role for the EU in the world.”

In their report, Leonard and Krastev note that while more than 60% of those polled believed the US was “broken”, most evaluated the EU and their own countries’ systems much more positively – an opportunity, they argue, to harness the collective power of the bloc for the benefit and protection of its citizens.

The survey found that 51% of those polled did not agree with the statement that under Biden the US was likely to resolve its internal divisions and seek to address international issues such as climate change, peace in the Middle East, relations with China or European security.

Amid a widespread sense of growing Chinese superiority, 79% of those polled in Spain, 72% in Portugal, 72% in Italy and 63% in France said they thought China would overtake the US as the world’s leading superpower within the next decade.

Just over 32% of all respondents – and a startling 53% of respondents in Germany – felt that after voting for Trump, Americans could not be trusted. Only in Hungary and Poland did significantly more people disagree with that view than agree.

Just 10% of those polled saw the US as a “reliable” security partner that would always protect Europe, while at least 60% in every country polled said they doubted their country could depend on US support in the event of a crisis.

The authors say the geopolitical consequences of this shift are significant: two-thirds of those surveyed said it was now important that Europe look after its own defence, including 72% in Portugal, 71% in Sweden, 70% in France and 69% in Poland.

At least half of respondents in every country surveyed said they would prefer their government to be neutral in a conflict between the US and China. Across the 11 states surveyed, only 23% of respondents thought their country should take Washington’s side against Russia, with 59% preferring to remain neutral.

Between 38% and 48% of respondents in seven countries thought the EU should adopt a tougher international stance on issues such as trade, taxation and regulation, while most countries considered Germany was now a more important country to “have a good relationship” with than the US.

The poll also revealed that in nine of the 11 countries – Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain and Sweden – where the same question was asked in previous years, the average share of people saying the EU’s political system worked very or fairly well had risen from 46% to 48%.

It found that people who believed their own national political system was working, which was more often the case in northern than in southern Europe, were more likely to say the EU was a success.

The report identified four “tribes” that went a long way to grouping respondents’ positions, depending on whether they felt the EU, US or China were rising or declining. The biggest tribe, “In Europe we trust”, comprised 35% of respondents, while only 9% belonged to “In America we trust”.

Soviets came toe to toe with the US, even exceeded US in science and technology for a while and had half the world on their side including china but eventually lost. it will take many more decades to see how the world politics shift and who comes on top.

To be a world power enough to put your own world order in the map. you have to be a hyperpower for a while. U.S was lucky that it was the only one after WW2 and then when soviets fell. otherwise it will most likely lead to an unending coldwar

"Allies" start to break ranks at the first sign of weaknesses. That's why China is never crazy about the idea of "allies".

Soviet never came toe to toe with US in economy, industries, manufacturings and trade, China is still not a military power, the poll is about the overall economy.

Allies are how you project your influence on the world stage. the more people that follow you leads to other people to follow you. Allies are how U.S blocked huaweii left and right, and how they handed over the huaweii grand daughter to U.S. in essence US was projecting its influence and affectin you out of their soil.

Allies are how U.S Dollar ended up becoming the World reserve currency.

If "allies" are only useful for blocking a brand, it's not worth having them. EU signed investment deal with China, that is what matters, way more important than adopting Huawei or not.

i didnt use the word "only". the substance of the matter is the projection of power. whether it be as little as china's largest telecom giant and "not just the brand". and allies are why china rushed to finsih the deal because it was genuinly afraid biden could have stopped it.

No, the trade deals dont matter. Our phase 1 deal with you. you couldnt fulfill your end of the deal and buy enough to fill the trade defecit and nobody could careless.

But the tool you have projecting what you want outside of your soil and genuinly affecting the other party isone attribute of a super power out of the 7.

And also the deal favored the europeans who wants teh forced technology transfer to stop. and the only reason europeans pushed for it was because US and china made the phase 1 deal. and europeans wanted one of their own

Europe believes China will overtake US as superpower during Biden's presidency: Poll

A majority of Europeans believe China will soon overtake America as world's leading power as they believe the incoming President Joe Biden will not be able to save the country from the decline, according to a report.

Things are changing around the world and especially in the US. One of the main things that have changed in the past year has been in the political system of the US.

There has been an alarming decline in the cooperation and coordination in the lawmakers has taken a hit and this has been quite obvious for the rest of the world.

Biden's win in the US White House has been welcomed by international groups, governments and people and many have labelled it as a welcoming change. However, a majority of Europeans feel Joe Biden cannot undo the damage caused by the twice-impeached US President Donald Trump.

"Europeans like Biden, but they don’t think America will come back as a global leader," said Mark Leonard, Director of the European Council on Foreign Relations. "When George W Bush was president, they were divided about how America should use its power. With Biden entering the White House, they are divided about whether America has power at all."

The thinktank conducted a survey of 15,000 people in 11 European countries in the last two months of the pandemic year 2020. Through the survey results, the researchers found that "Europeans’ attitudes towards the United States have undergone a massive change."

Majorities in key member states also believe that the political system of the US is now damaged beyond repair and thus Europe cannot rely solely on the US to defend it.

"They are drawing radical consequences from these lessons. Large numbers think Europeans should invest in their own defence and look to Berlin rather than Washington as their most important partner. They want to be tougher with the US on economic issues. And, rather than aligning with Washington, they want their countries to stay neutral in a conflict between the US and Russia or China," the report read.

This also hints that the Europeans think China will soon be able to overpower America and replace it as the most powerful nation of the world.

It was also revealed that 53 per cent of respondents believe that Biden's victory will make a positive difference to the European countries and 57 per cent think his win will also be beneficial for the European Union (EU).

However what is interesting is that many Europeans do not trust the American voters and believe that if the twice-impeached President and former reality TV star Donald Trump re-runs for the post of President, the American voters can bring him back to the White House.

Thats all just you uneducated/selfdeluding personal spin to rationalize away inconvenient facts.

You cut yourself with a trade war you started and you surrendered with a face saving "deal" that brought absolutely nothing new to the table. No one "cares" about your "phase last" deal, not just because its irrelevant, but an embarrassment for you because everyone knows if you had the upper hand you would never had aggreed to end your own tradewar with a deal that does not remotely resolve the situation you pulled up to justify why you started it in first place. In fact your failure here is a much more reasonable hypothesis why most European countries ignored your threats against them benefiting from dealing with China just for your sake.

You failed to make Europeans pawns to isolate China. Your suggestion that CAI is a result of Americas face saving "deal" is retarded. The talks for CAI where publicly initiated over half a year before Americas face saving "deal" with China was signed and published. The unbsubstantial suggestions that CAI only benefits Europe are just scripted American rethoric to cope with the plain fact that China and Europe did exactly what they have been talking about for years and deepened relations. But in your echochamber of American state controlled propaganda mouthpieces you call "free press" that always comes out filtered as headlines of Europe somehow rejecting China, as if the bulk of American citizen are too dumb to do two more clicks to find out the statements said the exact opposite of your media.

The people in Europe are NOT US allies but rather beneficiaries of American largesse, greed and the rebuilding of Europe after the savage and warlike people in Europe destroyed Europe in TWO WORLD WARS.
If the banking cabalists of Europe want to infect China and do to the Chinese what the cabalists did to the USA well too bad for future generations of the Chinese.

We will see. But I don't think the banking cabal will have the same iron grip on the Chinese political system as they have had on Washington. I think they will surely try and may have some influence, but they won't be the ones in charge.

But again, it's early in the game. When Shanghai becomes the world's financial center and China's elites fall into degeneracy after the 3rd or 4th generation becomes used to ruling the world, we might see China just succumbing to and becoming a part of the global banking class.

You guys are really tough but those cabalists man they don't play fair. Since you mention Shanghai. Who built that Bund? How long did it take the dealers and cabalists to pull China down last time?
