The Afghan security forces have destroyed a major insurgent base in southeastern Logar province during a military operation, officials said Thursday adding that the base had been active for nine years.

The camp, located in Zarghon Shahr village in Mohammad Agha district in Logar, was used to train militants – who were then sent from there to carry out subversive activities in Logar, Kabul and other parts of the country.

Officials said the base even had bunkers, which insurgents used as safe zones.

In response to a question on why the base had not been destroyed in nine years, Logar governor Halim Fedaee said former officials in his post did not take action in this regard and that they should answer to this.

"According to our information, 28 attacks have been plotted from the hub on Kabul," Halim said.

TOLOnews reporter, Karim Amini, who is in Logar, said this is thought to have been the biggest insurgent camp in the southeastern part of the country.

According to him, the Taliban militants have also continued to oppress the residents of Zarghon Shahr village in this time.

Villagers report that at least 100 families have been evicted from their homes over the years, while local police have also come under attack and many have had their homes torched.

It is believed that the destruction of the camp will reduce security threats in Logar and in Kabul.

The governor said: "The reason why the base has not been targeted during past years, should be asked from former leadership of the province."

Amini said that as per his evaluation it seems that Zarghon Shahr residents had a difficult life in the shadow of the Taliban over the past nine years.

"We were in peace in first three years of Karzai government but later we witnessed only insecurity and discomfort. Our children and women were not able to get out of the house," a resident of the village told TOLOnews.

The village is now cleared of Taliban, said officials. The Zarghon Shahr residents urged the government to take full control of the area and to erect Afghanistan's tricolor flag.
