It takes 20-25 lakhs to buy just an SUV in India. And Jaguar cars are a level above the standards of Mercs and BMWs.

Apart from their style, power, and reliability, Jaguars cars are marketed for the superiority in standard that they project. Selling them cheap would go against business sense.

No matter how good they are, the moment their prices come below 50 lakhs, they will lose the market.

Actually, they are priced this high because of 110% tax in India, the tax reduces when assembled in India. You could pick up the XF type for about Rs. 28 lakh OTR in USA even today.

And Jaguar would rather pay less taxes and pass benefit on to consumer.

not a very big number at all. needed to open more factories? or just because its boss is TATA now?

No that is not the reason; India will become the regional manufacturing hub. That cuts costs. Just as Cummins (the American disel engine manufacturer) has a factory in India which is a regional manufacuring hub for a certain BHP range of engines. Or Sandvik (from Sweden) supplies a range of mining tools from India.

The best part is not that the cars will be cheaper but the knowledge gained by our domestic automotive industry. The purpose to buy JLR is to bring technology home and TML is moving in that direction only.

TML Engineering and research center is already benchmarking JLR design and engineering. Few of the things will be incorporated in coming Safari and another SUV.
