A 178-meter-long dragon will spice up Chinese New Year celebrations until Cap Go Meh (the 15th and last day of the festival) at Singkawang Grand Mall in Singkawang, West Kalimantan.

Bong Sim Fo, who heads the committee in charge of the dragon, told news agency Antara in Pontianak on Tuesday that the team had completed the creation of the dragon, and that the artwork was currently being exhibited at the mall.

Measuring 1.1-meters in diameter, the dragon was assembled in the Pinyuh River starting on Oct. 1. Bong Sim Fo hopes the feat can be registered with the Indonesian Museum of Records (MURI).

On the opening night of Chinese New Year on Jan. 27, 51 people from the Santo Yosep Singkawang Alumni Group will perform the dragon dance.

A lantern parade will he held on Feb. 9, along with a procession of 52 students from Santo Yosep Singkawang to carry Indonesia’s flag, the Merah-Putih. An exotic bird will carry 150 lanterns on top of a decorated car.

The head of the alumni group, Bong Bu Kiat, expressed his enthusiasm about bringing to life the 178-meter dragon, admitting, however, that its length would make the performance quite difficult. (mra/kes)

SINGKAWANG, WEST KALIMANTAN

karte-6-649.gif

Map of Singkawang at Kalimantan (Borneo) Island (welt-atlas.de)

This map of Kalimantan (Borneo) Island shows the territories of Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei. The sole two Malaysian states at this island: Sarawak and Sabah are located at the northern part, Sabah is at the northern top tip, hardly seen in this map, as well as the tiny Brunei, while the largest part that belongs to Indonesia consists of five provinces: West, East, North, South and Central Kalimantan. Kalimantan or Borneo is a unique island in the sense it hosts the territories of three nations there.

The city of Singkawang is located at the upper westernmost part of the West Kalimantan province, a coastal city seats at Karimata Strait, a wide strait that connects the South China Sea to the Java Sea. Singkawang is the second largest city within that province after Pontianak, the provincial capital.

Singkawang
Singkawang 山口洋 or San Khew Jong in Hakka, is a city located in the province of West Kalimantan, on the island of Borneo in Indonesia. It is located at about 145 km north of Pontianak, the provincial capital, and is surrounded by the Pasi, Poteng, and Sakok mountains. Singkawang is derived from Hakka Chinese, San Khew Jong which refers to "a town in hills nearby a sea and estuary."

Population
According to the data from the 2014 Census, the population of Singkawang was 192,844, most of which are Chinese descents (around 70% of whole population). The largest group of Chinese descent is Hakka people (locally called as "Hakka-nyin" who speak Guangdong-Hakka dialect). The other major group of Chinese descent is Chaozhou People which is better known as Teochew. The rest are Melayu, Dayak, Javanese, and other ethnicities. The latest official estimate (as at January 2014) is 192,844.

The distribution of the religion practically follows the distribution of the ethnic groups; the largest groups are Buddhism, followed by Confucianism, Islam, Protestantism and Catholicism.

SPECTACULAR light shows, cultural performances and food offerings will feature in what’s being dubbed one of the biggest Chinese New Year festivals in the world.

The 17-day Melbourne event will be held at various inner city places such as Queensbridge Square, Queen Victoria Market, Federation Square, Emporium Melbourne and Southgate.

Tourism Minister John Eren has officially launched the Chinese New Year Melbourne Festival, which will run from January 27 to February 12 in the Year of the Rooster.

“It’s so important to let our partners know that we really care about their culture, we care about their traditions,” he said.

Festival liaison spokeswoman and former Melbourne City councillor Beverley Pinder said it would be bigger and brighter than the first festival last year.

“The 2017 festival will see our wonderful city come alive once again for two spectacular weeks.”

The lighting displays will include peacocks at Docklands, a colourful rooster at Queensbridge Square and mystical animals at Queen Victoria Market.

Principal partners are Study Melbourne and City of Melbourne, while major sponsors include the Victorian Multicultural Commission, China Southern Airlines, Metro Trains and Yarra Trams.

5,000 red lanterns to enliven Solo's Chinese New Year celebration

The Jakarta Post, 2017-01-18

2017_01_18_19668_1484735254._large.jpg

Between City Hall and Pasar Gede, where the center of a Chinese New Year celebration is slated to take place, a huge archway will be set up as part of decorations for the festive event in Solo, Central Java. (Shutterstock/File)

The Chinese New Year celebration in Solo (aka. Surakarta), Central Java, will be enlivened with 5,000 red lanterns along the street in front of Pasar Gede, as well as a number of events aimed at highlighting pluralism and tolerance.

Between City Hall and Pasar Gede, where the center of the celebration is slated to take place, a huge archway will be set up, along with thousands of lanterns.

Solo Imlek 2568 committee head Sumartono Hadinoto told kompas.com that the amount of lanterns this year will exceed last year’s number, which was only 3,000. “The committee is cooperating with several parties like street vendors, the Indonesian Marketing Association, Garuda Indonesia and local residents.”

Sumartono added that the event aimed to offer not only a celebration, but also to positively impact the economy of the city and its surrounding areas.

Meanwhile, Chinatown residents from Sudiroprajan village will hold the annual Grebeg Sudiro, a traditional event celebrating the unification of Javanese and Chinese culture.

“The face of diversity is a culture of carnivals. Decades ago, Sudiroprajan residents could coexist alongside Chinese and Javanese people. The procession later on will be carried out with two mountains of cake baskets combined with traditional Javanese food, such as onde-onde [stuffed glutinous rice balls], apem cakes and vegetables,” Sumartono said.
