The main thing is, What did we gain from all this??? I think Pakistan lost more than gain, Allying with the US in the Afghan war against Soviets when it wasn't our war in first place ( I don't think Soviets had any plans of attacking Pakistan, they just wanted to preserve their communist govt. in Afghan) the US fooled Pakistan into believing that Pakistan could be next after Afghanistan and used Pakistan for its dirty game.

1)We jeopardized our relationship with China in the process.

2)Militancy increased inside of Pakistan.

3)Our relationship with the US is still shaky.

4)Pakistan's economy took a huge loss cause of the War on terror, Talibans and other Alqaida groups started targeting Pakistan.

5)US never helped Pakistan to tackle the Kashmir issue, and would likely support India for that cause.

6)Pakistan is now the Most hated country in Afghanistan.

7)Still they a call ourselves a unreliable ally, and a rouge state putting blame on us for their failures in the region.

8)Some 50,000 Pakistanis have lost their lives in the process .

9)We have to clean all the mess now that US created, meanwhile US became close to India showing the Middlefinger to Pakistan.

10)All the drone attacks in Pakistan, destroying Pakistan's sovereignty and killing several civilians in the process.

11)US is the most hated country in Pakistan right now.

12)US interference in Pakistan's internal matters.

You think any other country would have helped US the extent that Pakistan did? and what did Pakistan gain from all this?? I don't think the aid that the US given us can cover the losses that Pakistan suffered in the process, Pakistan received more from China in 1 deal, i.e 46 Billion $ in investments just recently, thats more than the entire Aid Pakistan has EVER received from the US, and most of the US related aid goes to the military anyway...

Do you think Pakistan should have stayed neutral or played a different game i.e helping the Soviets in the Afghan war instead of the US and tried to attract the Soviet Union into becoming an ally of Pakistan?? which could have been a pretty reliable ally to Pakistan compared to the US?? Iran,Pakistan,USSR nexus would have been great for Pakistan IMO..

What do you think?? Was it possible or not?? Did Pakistan make a mistake ?? Or did the right thing by allying with the US in those wars??

Troll free comments please.. !!

The same Mujahideen that the ISI and CIA armed to fight against Soviets, were later called as Terrorists and we had to fight against them later..

Did that work out well??

No. Because US stance was with us or against us, if pakistan had declared itself neutral then USAF planes would have been bombing suspected militant hideouts in Pakistan.

Drones are still attacking inside Pakistan and killing several innocents in process.

This is nothing in comparison to what would have happened if Pakistan had said no back in 2001. US was mad with anger that time, there mainland was attacked and 3000 people died. They wanted revenge and did not care who they took it from.

No. If they didn't they would have been isolated and sanctioned by US and India would have exerted pressure also and Pakistan would be royally screwed and in a very tight spot.

I think his question was if it would have been better had Pakistan allied itself with the Soviet Union during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan..

In 2001 the choice was get bombed back to stone age or say yes. We would be finished unless people here are delusional and think taking on a superpower is healthy thing to do.

However I always felt we should have gone in to Afghanistan with US/Nato. That way we would have more influence in how things would shape up.

It was very much our war. Do you think the Soviets were there to enjoy the riches of Afghanistan? They were after a warm-water port and Pakistan was the best route. They couldn't go after Iran since it was heavily militarized under Shah would have been very costly. So their target was access to Pakistan's coast. With an ally in India, it was the perfect opportunity. Think about it...Why were they in Afghanistan? There is nothing in Afghanistan.

Chinese have been very open that they don't have any problem with our alliance with USA as long as it doesn't work against their interests.
6)Pakistan is now the Most hated country in Afghanistan.
Afghans have always hated Pakistan, they will continue to hate Pakistan. They believe KPK to be a part of Afghanistan.
Let me tell you of an incidence from history, when Quaid visited Pak-Afghan border one Afghan border guard dared to shake Quaids hand, he was killed just for that gesture.

The same would have happened. US would have declared proxy against Pakistan and the pashtuns would have been mad for vengeance.
