The National Committee on Protection of Oil, Gas, Mineral Resources, Power and Ports will embark on another long march to the Sundarbans, demanding scrapping of Rampal Thermal Power Plant.

The programme will be held from Mar 10 to 15, convenor of the committee Anu Muhammad told a press conference on Saturday.

The platform had staged another long march to Sundarbans in 2013 with the same demand.

“Prior to the march, protest rallies will be held in Dhaka and Narayanganj on Feb 15 and across the country on Feb 27,” he said at the press conference at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity Auditorium.

Bangladesh signed a deal with India on Jan 29, 2012, to set up the 1,300-megawatt thermal power plant in Bagerhat’s Rampal.

The two countries will have equal partnership in the venture styled Bangladesh-India Friendship Power Company Ltd.

Environmentalists and locals say this coal-fired power plant will threaten Sundarbans ecological balance.

The government, however, insists that proper measures will be taken to protect the environment from pollution.

Anu Muhammad said, “We have explained to government on various occasions about harmful consequences of Rampal power plant.”

“The Sundarbans is acting as a natural shield to protect the environment and the people of Bangladesh. As a biodiversity hotspot, it protects the environmental balance.

He alleged, “Indian company NPTC has undertaken the project violating the laws of their own country. According to India’s EIA guidelines, power plants cannot be set up within a 25-kilometre radius of forest areas.”

“Considering a 14-km buffer zone around the Sundarbans, the power plant is going to be set up within 4-km off the forest,” Anu Muhammad added.

Communist Party of Bangladesh leader Ruhin Hossain Prince, Socialist Party of Bangladesh leader Bazlur Rashid Firoz and Ganasanghati coordinator Junayed Saki were present at the press conference.

Sometimes industrialization need sacrifice, either you chose environmentalist demands or people who need electricity for their daily needs and industry. Developing country doesn't have much choice and leisure to pursue green energy like Developed Countries.

Green energy is not optional anymore.If island and disaster prone countries like BD wants to save their asses from global warming they better chase green energy rather contributing in co2 level.
and when a natural resource like the Sundarbans litterely saves million of asses during natural disasters, losing it is not an option for few hundred megawatts. It simply is not worth the loss and doesn't make any sense in any sense.

Sundarbans is very delicate. The onus is on BD govt to provide an alternate location. Merely blaming India doesnt help. We can work only according to BD laws.

The usual practice is to protect the people from high handed policies that governments use to extract the above.

I have no problems with their wanting to protect sunder bans. I was referring to their name.

Whatever BD will doing is always in small scale and simple will not add too much for the legacy of other Countries like China, India and US toward pollution on Earth.

Is it a reaction to the news of BD cancelling chinese port and letting India and Japan build new deep water ports? Does Rampal Thermal Power Plant fall within the limits of Sunderban? In my opinion Rampal is farther from sunderbans much more than Kalapara where the China is building its thermal power plant. Have the protesters targetted kalapara thermal plant also? if no, they are playing politics at the behest of the chinese perhaps.

Frankly speaking I would join the protests if it really harmed Sunderbans. I am sure the govt. would have done some study before deciding on the site.

I think Kuakata area used to be part of Sunderbans. not sure about it now.
