Lockheed Martin has received a $218 million contract to supply 18 M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) launchers to Romania.

The contract, announced Friday by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), is worth more than $218 million is provide procurement of 18 M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems launchers, associated training, spares and planned enhancement and product improvement modifications.

The DoD also noted that all work will be performed in Grand Prairie, Texas, with an estimated completion date of Dec. 30, 2020.




HIMARS was developed by Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control under an advanced concept technology demonstration (ACTD) programme, placed in 1996.

According to the company, HIMARS carries a six-pack of GMLRS rockets or one TACMS missile, and is designed to launch the entire MLRS family of munitions.

HIMARS is the most technically advanced, affordable and sustainable artillery solution.

The new missile systems provide cutting-edge technology on an indigenous platform. Simplifies coalition operations, training, logistics and coordination.

In August 2017, the U.S. State Department has made a determination approving a possible Foreign Military Sale to Romania for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) and related support and equipment with an estimated cost of $1.25 billion.

The Government of Romania has requested the possible sale of fifty-four High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) Launchers, eighty-one Guided Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (GMLRS) M31A1 Unitary, eighty-one Guided Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (GMLRS) M30A1 Alternative Warhead, and fifty-four Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) M57 Unitary.
