Lights off for Earth Hour today

PUNE: Earth Hour was launched by the World Wildlife Fund in 2007. Since then, the event has engaged people across 7,001 cities and towns in 152 countries. It encourages individuals, communities, households and businesses to turn off non-essential lights for one hour as a symbol for their commitment to the planet. This year, Earth Hour will be celebrated on Saturday between 8.30pm and 9.30pm.

Celebrations

Many hotels and restaurants in the city plan to celebrate Earth Hour, not only by turning off the non-essential lights but also engaging their patrons in candle-light dinners.

Courtyard by Marriott Pune, Chakan will minimize the use of electricity in the kitchen. A special cold buffet consisting of salads, soups and desserts is on the menu. Chafing dishes will not be used and the food will be served in 'patravali' plates.

JW Marriott Hotel, which saved 1,000 units of electricity last year, plans to continue the practice this year and will be switching off all big units of lighting for one hour.

At Hyatt Pune, non-essential lights will be switched off and essential lights in guest corridors, public areas will be dimmed to save energy. Candles will be placed on all the tables in the restaurants and guests will be served a special Earth Hour cocktail or a mocktail.

Flags restaurant is inviting its patrons for quiet, romantic candle-lit dinners during the Earth Hour. The music and more than 50% of the air-conditioning and lighting in the restaurant will be turned off

People speak

I plan to switch off all non-essential lights and electrical points in my house for one hour. Not only will I enjoy a peaceful, candle-lit dinner with my husband, but also educate my daughter on energy conservation

Seema Sharma, homemaker

By turning off electricity for one hour, my child will understand the importance of conserving this limited resource

Ritu Goyal, a resident of Balewadi

We have been observing Earth Hour every year. Due to the heat, turning off the fan will be difficult but lights and TV can definitely be switched off for an hour. We need to conserve resources for future generations. We must also encourage use of solar energy.

I used to remember power cuts every half an hour when i lived in Kerala.

The only time our family bonded was when the power cut off our television.

That's one way to put it, i and my brother come out of rooms when he have a power cut,LOL bonding does take place then but not necessarily. lol, the usual complaint is what happened to wifi? :D

Will the Earth Hour still apply if we get power from renewable sources.

Anyways the Govt should get power to all Indians 24 x 7, then we can think about celebrating Earth Hour or whatever it is.
